Big C abandons Canada to Cornwall crossing after sinking at quayside

Andrew Bedwell has abandoned his mission to sail from Canada to Cornwall after his home boat sank” while docked.

He was setting out on the 1,900-mile solo voyage from St John’s, Newfoundland, at noon on Saturday, but a few hours into the voyage, the Big C began to take on water and he was forced to return to shore.
When his team evaluated the damage the next day, they found that the boat had sunk in the port.

The ship was heavily damaged during the recovery process, and it has been confirmed that she is being forced to abandon her voyage entirely.

Andrew Bedwell said: “We had to do some modifications before we left on the boat yesterday. In the sea, I noticed an inlet of water. I wasn’t happy about it, so I came back for security reasons just to check it out.”

The sailor spent three years hand-building the Big C, his fiberglass microyacht, which stands 12 feet tall and has a top speed of 2.5 mph.

She planned to survive on vitamin drinks, jerky food bags, raisins, and grease on her journey.

Before his aborted trip, Andrew had said: “You never know, you could hit an iceberg. The Titanic was deemed unsinkable, but she hit one, and there are a lot of icebergs out there.”
