What are the Pan American Games?
The Pan American Games (Pan Am Games) is a continental multi-sport event in the Americas featuring summer sports and is the oldest continental games in the world. Competition is held among athletes from nations of the Americas every four years in the summer before each Summer Olympic Games.

The sailing slate features nearly all Olympic sailing classes and also welcomes three non-Olympic classes: men’s and women’s Sunfish, the Snipe, and the Lightning.

    What’s at stake?
For Olympic classes: The 2023 Pan American Games is the second opportunity (following the 2023 Sailing World Championships in The Netherlands) for the United States to qualify for berths at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Read more about country qualification here.

For non-Olympic classes (Snipe, Lightning, Sunfish): The Pan American Games is one of the top international honors in each respective class.

Athletes in Olympic classes who were selected for the Paris 2024 Test Event July 9 – 16, 2023 also qualified for the 2023 Pan American Games (excluding the Mixed 470, which is not raced at the Pan American Games).

    Lightning, Snipe, Sunfish Qualifiers Recaps:

Lightning Pan Am Qualifier: 13 teams of three battled it out at Carolina Yacht Club in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina from May 4-7, with sights set on representing the USA in the Lightning at the 2023 Pan Am Games. The fight came down to two teams: winners Allan Terhune, Jr., Sarah Chin (2008 Olympian, Women’s 470), and Madeline Baldridge, followed closely in second place with only a three-point difference by Ched Proctor, Meredith Killion, and Cory Sertl. Both teams sailed a strong regatta with worst finishes of 7th place and two race wins for both boats in eight total races.

    Snipe Pan Am Qualifier:

18 Snipes put their skills to the test at Lauderdale Yacht Club for the US Pan Am Qualifiers, held May 19-21. Among the ranks was Ernesto Rodriguez, 2019 Pan Am Snipe Gold Medalist with partner Hallie Schiffman, now teamed up with Kathleen Tocke and our 2023 Pan Am Games representatives in the Snipe. The fleet was stocked with top Snipe talent like Augie Diaz (Pan Ams Snipe Silver Medalist in 1971 and 2011, Bronze Medalist in 2015 and two-time Snipe World Champion), Peter Commette (1976 Olympian and 1991 Pan Ams Bronze Medalist), and Enrique Quintero (2007 Snipe World Champion).

    Sunfish Pan Am Qualifier:

Following Sunfish North American and National Championships qualifiers, 15 men and 15 women convened at Sayville Yacht Club in Blue Point, New York from July 7-9, to race for the chance to represent the USA at the 2023 Pan Am Games. Conner Blouin finished the regatta with a 12-point lead and six race wins of eleven total races, and Amanda Callahan secured her ticket to Santiago with a 10-point lead and near perfect scoreline of eight race wins out of 11 races and no finish greater than a second place. The 2023 Pan Am Games will be Blouin’s third consecutive Pan Am Games as the USA Men’s Sunfish representative, and Amanda Callahan will make her debut as the USA Women’s Sunfish representative this October 28 through November 5.

With more than 2200 nautical miles still to sail, at least two more low pressure systems before a timely finish into Lorient expected Saturday, there is still a long, long way to go on the Retour a La Base solo Transatlantic from Martinique to France.

After about 10 days in the Southern Ocean, I wake up this morning to the boat broaching. I stop her from broaching only to realize it is freezing outside! The sun is up, it comes up around 4am UTC, there are some cumulus clouds floating about but what broached the boat was a little squall bringing 26 knots after a night of 18-20knots. The boat doesn’t like the sudden change in breeze strength and direction making her wipe out slightly. It’s a gentle broach and easily fixed...
