Practice Make Perfect

  • Practice Make Perfect

With just 6 days remaining before the Red Bull Youth Americas Cup, the teams switched into a higher gear as the Louis Vuitton Cup has ended and the SF City Front is now available for practice. 8 of the 10 team were on the water for Monday's practice. With wind limits set at 18 knots for the teams, afternoons on SF Bay are not really on the table, as wind kick up to 25 knots plus by 1:00 PM almost daily. Yes you wonder, why not let the kids loose?

Frankly we would love to see it, but prudence and safety are a high priority in these games, and after the Artemis tragedy in May, the realization that things can go south in a big hurry is still on the minds of all involved.

In today's action, the 8 teams in attendance finally all lined up simultaneously for practice runs and starts on the very course the AC World Series was held. Winds in the low teens perhaps climbing to the mid teens with stronger gusts at the bottom of the course.

With 8 boats jostling for position at the start, teams worked out current and breeze factors as well as strategy for the flood conditions. This however will switch next week when the ebb takes over. Constantly impressive in starts, boat handling and tactice were All In from Germany, the UAS45 team, Artemis Youth and NZL supported by ETNZ.

It's too early to count anyone out and the learning curve is extremely steep. New Boats, new venue, new conditions and a moving target when currents and winds are combined.

It's going to be an interesting next 10 days.

    We look forward to it!

Just days ago, Emirates Team New Zealand buried the bow of their AC40 while testing in waves on Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf, which resulted in damage to the forward sections of the hull and deck structure. While the on-water team was recovering the yacht and returning to dock, the team’s engineers immediately began reviewing onboard data to identify the root cause of the issue.

As summer gives way to autumn on the Mediterranean, Alinghi Red Bull Racing are trialling their new M2-2L, a flatter-cut, slightly smaller mainsail that allows for rapid de-powering. Twinned with the small J4 jib today, the Swiss sailed in mean winds of 14 knots and gusts up to 18-20 knots with a heavy seaway combining natural swell and a short, sharp 1.5m chop just off the Barcelona beachfront.

It was up up and away on a very successful maiden sail for Emirates Team New Zealand’s AC40 on the familiar waters of the ‘back paddock’ between Auckland’s Waiheke Island and Howick Beachlands.

After a long tow out behind the team’s hydrogen powered chase boat ‘Chase Zero’, the sails hoisted and sheeted on, it took just a handful of minutes for helmsman Nathan...
