GUYOT environnement Team Europe has announced they will abandon leg 3 of The Ocean Race and devote their efforts to rejoining the race in Itajai, Brazil ahead of leg 4.
The release issued by the team said:
"The decision has been made. We had no choice. If we had resumed the third leg and sailed around the Southern Ocean to Itaja?, we would not have had time to prepare for the next leg. We would then have always been late on the other legs as well. In...

470 miles would appear to be a solid lead, but there is hope for the chasing pack
Waking up Monday with a 470+ nautical mile lead, one week into leg 3, would appear to be an enviable position for Kevin Escoffier and his Team Holcim PRB.
But the challenge of a big lead is in how best to cover your opposition, who are sailing in an entirely different weather system and have the benefit of seeing where you are. Looking at the forecast, there... -

Reeling In The Leader

As Team Holcim-PRB continues to set the standard, racing at speed towards the first scoring gate at 143 degrees east longitude, three other boats are - finally - in fast pursuit.
Biotherm, 11th Hour Racing Team and Team Malizia needed to dive as far south as the edge of the ice exclusion zone to find the wind, but now they're in it and making miles to the east.
"We have good conditions, flat sea state,"... -

A Change Of Pace For The Ocean Race Fleet
It is still a far cry from traditional Roaring 40s weather, but at least one critical element has returned - the wind.
Biotherm, 11th Hour Racing Team and Team Malizia are all finally on the move after a frustrating period of unusually light, warm, and calm conditions.
While the unusual weather suited Team Malizia as they worked through the day and into the night on Wednesday to repair their damaged mast, it was received far less well by the sailors...Last edited by Photoboy; 03-03-2023, 01:02 PM. -

From Despair To Determination And Repair
Yesterday Team Malizia discovered a large rip in the mast
Since then the team have put together a plan, with their shore team, to fix the issue and to continue sailing. The next 12 hours will be crucial.
Boris Herrmann commented to friends, partners and family: " Dear friends:
A very strong metal part holding a sail up broke the evening before yesterday at nightfall. (Code zero lock). When the sail fell down its halyard ripped a 26 cm long...

by PhotoboyLining up for the Horn
Cape Horn is just over 1000 miles away, but they will be hard-earned miles...
The teams have the end of the hardest part of the longest leg in the history of The Ocean Race in sight.
On Friday afternoon UTC, the most iconic of landmarks to offshore sailors - Cape Horn - lies just over 1000 miles to the east.
But those miles won't come easily. Gale force winds and 6-8 metre seas are on the menu...-

by PhotoboyBig conditions ahead on the way to Cape Horn
The weather is forecast to provide one final taste of Southern Ocean conditions on the approach to Cape Horn.
For 50 years of The Ocean Race, sailors have considered the Southern Ocean leg, the racing that takes place between Cape Town and Cape Horn, deep in the southern latitudes, as the biggest milestone in the event.
Rounding Cape Horn marks the end of the southern conditions, where deep low...-

by PhotoboyThe people on sunken boat SV Raindancer in the Pacific are safely aboard SV Rolling Stone after 10 hrs in a lifeboat.
Great job by them and all the other yachts incl SV Far that went to the rescue.
Most of the rescue was coordinated by WhatsApp using Starlink which is a game changer when it comes to safety. At least 8 yachts, mainly World Arc rally members plus a large ship responded.
Update from the skipper of Raindancer Rick added in photos...-

Day 1
Sailing counterclockwise around the island in an 18-25 knot northerly, 25 Superyachts sailed their first of three racing days at the St. Barths Bucket Regatta 2023. The testing conditions forced three entries to withdraw due to equipment failure and some to limp across the finish line; however, others seemed to have the luck of the Irish with them (after all, today is St. Patrick’s Day) and spun that into gold over the 20-26 nautical mile courses that were...-

The Ocean Race is still racing close together as they approach the most isolated place on the planet
