Big Wave Mama's

  • Big Wave Mama's

Bianca Valenti, 29, talks about big wave surfing as she heads from her home in San Francisco to surf Mavericks in Half Moon Bay on the eve of the Wickr women's big wave multimedia event.

SF Chronicle's Ann Killion write about the Big Wave Women in the following article:

On a rainy Wednesday afternoon, just outside Half Moon Bay, 12 women got together and surfed “the Everest” of big waves: Mavericks.

It was a watershed — yes, pun intended — event. Never before had that many women been out together in the Mavericks lineup. They came from Brazil, from France, from Hawaii and from around the Bay Area to surf the renowned break.

“It was totally historic and awesome,” Ocean Beach-based surfer Bianca Valenti said. “There was good energy. It was totally empowering.”

The event was put together, in part, by the WickrX Foundation, which is sponsoring a Big Wave Women’s Surf Invitational and MultiMedia Production. The encrypted-messaging-technology company, based in San Francisco, is providing exposure for women who surf big waves.

The women upload their footage and photos to the platform and have been building a community. On Wednesday, that virtual community became real.

The Titans of Mavericks event — the window for that competition will open Jan. 1 — is a testosterone-fueled male competition. So far, there’s nothing equivalent for the women.

Valenti is one of four women who surfed Wednesday with experience surfing at Mavericks. The others were Savannah Shaughnessy and Jamilah Star, both of Santa Cruz, and Sarah Gerhardt, who back in 1999 became the first woman to surf the massive waves.

According to Valenti, the conditions Wednesday weren’t great. Surf was about 15 feet (meaning a 30-foot face), with a wind that made things tricky.
