OCEAN BEACH, California/USA (Tuesday, May 3, 2011) – In what has been canonized as one of the greatest ongoing professional surfing legacies on the ASP World Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Search event, the only ASP World Title competition with have roving license, has confirmed Ocean Beach, San Francisco as the official destination for its 2011 instalment, set to run November 1-11, 2011.
Now in its seventh year as an ASP World Title event, the Rip Curl Pro Search will see the world’s best surfers pitted against the diverse conditions offered by Ocean Beach, San Francisco.
“I’m told it could be like Hossegor on steroids,” Neil Ridgway, Global Advertising and Promotions Chairman, said. “And that’s just the surf. The City of San Fran is awesome and offers the world’s best surfers a chance to see and search a million different ways. It will make a welcome change from the more remote destinations, but we will be back out in the jungle somewhere in 2012 for sure.”
Mick Fanning (AUS), 29, former two-time ASP World Champion shared his enthusiasm with the destination for this year:
“The Rip Curl Pro Search event is always a tour stop I get super excited about. I love the idea of pitching up to a place I haven’t been before. You get to see somewhere different and meet new people. I also love the trying to adapt to waves I’ve never surfed before.”
“I haven’t spent anytime in San Francisco so I’ll be scoping it for the first time,” Fanning continued. “From what I hear they get plenty of swell and there’s some quality waves in the area. I can’t wait.”
The mystique of the Rip Curl Pro Search, the only ASP “floating license” on tour which allows Rip Curl to change locations year-to-year, has only continued to strengthen with each successful season. After Mick Fanning claimed the inaugural Rip Curl Pro Search title at Reunion Island in 2005, the event has gone on to make history in Mexico, Chile, Indonesia, Portugal, and most recently Puerto Rico.
“The legacy of the Rip Curl Pro Search event and the dynamic it brings to the ASP World Title season excites the surfers, staff and public every year,” Brodie Carr, ASP International CEO, said. “The event has a history of providing challenging and epic surf year in and year out and the spirit of the Search is lost upon no one. We’re thrilled to be bringing the world’s best surfers to San Francisco in 2011.”
With a red-hot ASP World Title race brewing this season between reigning 10-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (AUS), 39, Australians Mick Fanning (AUS), 29, Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, and Taj Burrow (AUS), 32, as well as the new guard including Jordy Smith (ZAF), 23, Dane Reynolds (USA), 25, Adriano de Souza (BRA), amongst others, the 2011 Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco is sure to deliver fireworks to the “City by the Bay”.
