    CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RACE 1: 06:10:2018
Seven boats failed to finish, one was left badly damaged after a nasty collision with a yacht and the winner fought off major fatigue in a dramatic start to Manly 16ft Skiff club’s 2018/19 championship.

With a big southerly swell running and winds gusting around the 25-knot mark, there was talk of cancelling the race.

But Manly Surf n Slide (David O’Connor) was happy to tackle the tough conditions.

With a crew ready-made for such a challenging course, O’Connor expertly navigated his way around the track while avoiding disaster to take an early lead in the seven-race series.

Surf n Slide’s final winning margin of 7min:6secs illustrated just how dominate they were on a day where simply staying upright was a challenge.

Altis Consulting (Phil Cooke) was a distant second with Sutech Building Consultants (Will Howard) third and Koreman Marine Composites (Felix Grech) fourth.

“Combine the heavy swell with that breeze and it got pretty hectic out there,” O’Connor said.

“The conditions were right on the limit but having two capable blokes in Trent (Barnabas) and Ricky (Bridge) on my boat certainly made life easier.

“As the race got on we got more and more fatigued but we were pretty steady most of the way.

“Once we got out in front we were fairly comfortable. It was just a matter of staying out of trouble and staying upright.

“We’re really happy with that start - now it’s about being consistent from here.”

Nineteen boats faced the starter’s gun but only 12 made it across the finish line as the wind and swell took a heavy toll on the fleet.

Fluid Building (Henry Makin) needed assistance returning to the beach after coming off second best with a yacht.

The boat suffered extensive damage to its rigging but thankfully skipper and crew were all okay.

Surf n Slide clinched the double, taking out handicap honours from Altis and Growthbuilt (Ryan Wilmot).

Race five in the annual pointscore series will be sailed on Saturday.
