France and the United States lead the first day in Cascais
38 boats in the Portuguese sailing Mecca

On the first day of the 2021 Cascais 49er & 49er Fx Championship, the Olympic fleet composed of 28 boats, of the 49erFx class, plus 10 boats, of the 49er class, fulfilled the day’s schedule when holding the three scheduled races for each class.

The ladies’ fleet, which started the day, found the Guia race course in the morning, with the classic conditions of that local with wind in the northwest quadrant with 15 knots of intensity. The French team of Lili Sebesi and Yann Jauvin closed the opening day at podium top position with a bullet in the second race of the day. The runner ups, two points behind the leadership, are the world champions in title, the Spanish Tamara Echegoyen and Paula Barceló. Closing the podium are the gold medalists at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze from Brazil.









In the 49er men’s Olympic class, they started racing around 3:00 pm after the organization was forced to change its position on the race course due to the strong wind that was felt in the place where the female fleet fulfilled its schedule during the morning. With the wind blowing from the same direction as in the morning but rising to the 20 knots of intensity the boys also fulfilled the program scheduled for the inaugural day. American duo composed by Ian Barrows and Hans Henken leads the championship after two bullets in the last two races of the day. In second place are the leaders compatriots Nevin Snow and Dane Wilson. In the lowest position of the podium are the Frenchs Robert Solune and Sipan Valentin

In total, in the two races, 4 continents are represented – America, Europe, Asia and Oceania – in a total of 19 nationalities will sail in the bay of Cascais.

This championship has the support of Turismo de Portugal, Visit Cascais, Cascais Town Hall, Cascais Marina and Vista Alegre.

Great for team USA!

Nice to see two team atop the standings for a change, however it would be nicer if there were more than 10 boats in the fleet.
I assume that is because other teams have secured their spot in the Summer Games already or is it COVID related?

France and America consolidate leadership in Cascais

On the second day of the 2021 Cascais 49er & 49er Fx Championship races, the forty Olympic boats filled the bay of Cascais with colour to complete the three races planned for this day.

Once again, it was up to the ladies’ fleet to start hostilities in Cascais Bay. This time the race committee setted the course inside the Cascais bay where competitors could find wind conditions between 10 and 17 knots in intensity but with some shits in the direction. These bearing oscillations gave Olympic sailors some headaches, which were forced to change their strategy in order to a shifty in wind conditions day. The homogeneity of the fleet is impressive since, after 6 races, the winners of the races is all the times in a change. The podium on the second day is different from the opening day where only yesterday’s leaders, the French mixed team Lili Sebesi and Yann Jauvin remain. Moving up to second place is also the French mixed team Kevin Fischer and Dubois Albane. Closing the podium is the Danish team, bronze medalist in the 2019 world championship, composed by Ida Nielsen and Marie Olsen.









The Singaporean female duo and Cascais residents, since the end of 2016, composed by Kimberly Lim and Cecilia Low had a second day in great prominence to make two fifths and one seventh in the three races disputed in the second day rising to the tenth position of the general overall .

With the wind increasing in intensity during the afternoon, it was the turn of the men’s Olympic fleet to show their attitude. With the wind already in their twenties and maintaining the direction instability of the morning, the American duo composed by Ian Barrows and Hans Henken remained in the lead. The Carioca duo made up of Marco Grael and Gabriel Borges rose to second place in the overall standings, being two points behind the leadership. At the bottom of the podium is the American duo composed of Nevin Snow and Dane Wilson.
