    18ft Skiffs
2022 JJ Giltinan Championship, Race 1
    Race sponsor: Fisher & Paykel
    George Calligeros Trophy
    Saturday, 5 March 2022
    Sydney Harbour

The Andoo team of Seve Jarvin, Matt Stenta and Sam Newton stamped itself as a clear favourite for the 2022 JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship with a brilliant victory in Race One of the regatta on Sydney Harbour today.

Andoo trailed the early leader Balmain Slake (Henry Larkings) for the first lap of the North-East course before gaining the upper hand on the second beat to the Beashel Buoy, then powered away to score a 2m17s victory over Tech2 (Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake), with the defending champion Smeg team (Michael Coxon, Ricky Bridge and Zac Barnabas) a further 51s back in third place.

Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price) finished strongly to take fourth place ahead of Balmain and Birkenhead Point Marina (Tim Westwood).

Today's race started in a light NE wind, with a run-out tide, giving each team an opportunity to take a variety of preferred courses and the 25-boat fleet was spread across the harbour as it made its way to the Beashel Buoy.

Balmain Slake, Burrawang-Young Henrys (Simon Nearn), Birkenhead Point Marina and Finport Finance (Keagan York), along with Smeg and Noakesailing (Sean Langman) were prominent throughout the long windward leg before Balmain Slake grabbed a 20s lead from Burrawang-Young Henrys, Birkenhead Point Marina and Noakesailing.

The rookie Balmain Slake team retained the lead on the spinnaker run into the wing mark off the southern end of Shark Island, and continued to hold the fleet off between Shark and Clark islands.

Andoo was the very big improver on the run from the Beashel Buoy.

The team was only in ninth place, behind Finport Finance, Smeg, Yandoo (John Winning) and Tech2, as spinnakers were set but was vying for the lead by the time the fleet reached the wing mark.

At the end of the first lap, Birkenhead Point Marina was in third place ahead of Smeg, Tech2, Rag & Famish Hotel, Burrawang-Young Henrys and Black Swan (Luke Parkinson).

Once Andoo grabbed the lead, the team began to dominate the race and extended the lead to 55s on the following beat to the top mark at the Beashel Buoy. Tech2 had moved into second place with Balmain Slake holding on narrowly ahead of Smeg and Birkenhead Point Marina.

Andoo extended the lead to 1m15s on the downwind leg back to the bottom mark off Clark Island, then increased the margin to 1m45s at the top mark on the final lap of the course.

Andoo's skipper Seve Jarvin has already won seven JJ Giltinan Championships as a skipper and one as part of the 2005 champion Club Marine team, and after today's performance has every chance to extend the record.

While Andoo's performance was impressive, there were many teams in the fleet which performed strongly., including the three teams which finished behind the very experienced top three placegetters.

The Birkenhead Point Marina team of Tim Westwood, Will Dargaville and Alex Chittenden gave their best performance since coming together this season and won the handicap section of the race.

Stormy Sunday: Andoo's Dominant Way Continues

    18ft Skiffs
2022 JJ Giltinan Championship, Race 2
    Race sponsor: Birkenhead Point Marina
    Cliff Monkhouse Memorial Trophy
    Sunday, 6 March 2022
    Sydney Harbour

The Andoo team of Seve Jarvin, Matt Stenta and Sam Newton consolidated yesterday's victory with another outstanding performance to take out today's Race 2 of the 2022 JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship on Sydney Harbour.

The team grabbed an early lead in the 20-knot Southerly wind and led clearly around the entire course before going on to claim a one minute win from the Tech2 team of Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake, which also finished in second place yesterday.

Noakesailing (Sean Langman, Ed Powys and Josh Porebski) finished a further 3m13s behind Tech2 in third place, ahead of The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines (Aron Everett), Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price) and Lazarus Capital Partners (Marcus Ashley-Jones).

After the first two races, Andoo leads the championship with a total of two points, followed by Tech2 on four points. Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price, Josh McKnight and Harry Hall) is in third place on nine points, followed by the defending champion Smeg team (Michael Coxon) and The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines on 15 points.

Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Steve Thomas and Lazarus Capital Partners are equal sixth on 16 points.

Shortly after the start of today's race a heavy rain shower brought extremely low visibility on the harbour as the fleet raced under spinnakers from Clark Island to Obelisk Bay.

Once the shower cleared, and the visibility returned, as the fleet made its way back on the beat to the Rose Bay mark Andoo had established a big break over her nearest challengers, which were Tech2, Noakesailing, The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines, Lazarus Capital Partners and Rag & Famish Hotel.

While most of the positions remained unchanged over the second lap of the course, the spectacle of speed and crew work on the skiffs was enough to keep spectators' interest high as the skiffs completed the long course in just over 1 hour 14 minutes.

With just three legs of the course left to sail, the Tech2 team refused to surrender meekly and put as much pressure on Andoo as possible and for a short time looked as though it could have been a closer margin at the finish.

Special mention must be given to the performances of many of the younger/new teams in the fleet and it will be interesting to watch the continued improvement over the next two days racing over the shorter courses.

Races 3 and 4 will be sailed on Sydney Harbour on Tuesday then Races 5 and 6 on Wednesday, before long course racing resumes on Thursday.

The handicap section of today's race was won by the Noakes Youth team of Tom Cunich, Fynn Sprott and Harry Smith.

The Race Committee for the 2022 JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship were forced to abandon Race 3 due to the gale force conditions being experienced on Sydney Harbour today.

One of the committee said that when the team were setting the start line they believed conditions were sailable but later the southerly winds were averaging 28 knots, with gusts up to 35 knots.

A decision will now have to be made regarding the upcoming race dates in the championship.

A few images, from near the intended start line, are attached.

THE 2022 JJ GILTINAN CHAMPIONSHIP RACE DATES ARE:
      March 9 Races 5 & 6, A.J. Reynolds Trophy

March 10 Race 7, Bill Miller Memorial Trophy

March 12 Race 8, Big Kite Memorial Trophy

      March 13 Race 9

The south eastern portion of Australia has been experiencing rather wet weather of late:

      LINKY

Sydney’s record-busting deluge has killed at least two people, forced thousands to abandon their homes and will trigger a sharp climb in insurance claims, as authorities warn of a new danger to the city on Wednesday from gale-force winds.

The 820 millimetres of rain that has fallen on Sydney since the beginning of January is more than double the year to date average and smashes the previous record, set in 1956, of 782mm. Some areas recorded more than 120mm in six hours on Tuesday, turning roads into rivers and causing chaos for commuters.

Major roads across the city were impassable for much of the day. Two cars were submerged on a flooded Roseville Bridge, three key crossings in the Hawkesbury-Nepean valley were closed, and water was cascading down cliffs at the Spit, with almost 130mm falling at Mosman in six hours.

The torrential rain is forecast to continue overnight but will ease significantly on Wednesday, although dangerous winds will continue to cause chaos. Wind gusts exceeding 90 km/h were forecast for Sydney and the Illawarra into Wednesday morning.

Sydneysiders from all corners of the city – Camden in the south, Richmond in the north and Narrabeen on the coast – watched on in horror as their suburbs were submerged.

The SES ordered all residents in the north-western Sydney suburbs of McGraths Hill and Mulgrave to evacuate by 8.30pm, before the Hawkesbury River reaches 13.5 metres. Late on Tuesday night the river was still rising and had exceeded flood levels from March 2021 at North Richmond, Windsor, Sackville, Lower Portland and Wisemans Ferry. Peaks are expected overnight and into Wednesday.

About 40,000 people across the state have been ordered to leave their homes, and another 20,000 were told to prepare to leave. These included suburbs along the Nepean, Georges and Hawkesbury rivers, as well as residents near Narrabeen Lagoon and Manly Dam, where water was spilling over dam walls.

The SES told residents and businesses in Narrabeen to evacuate by 7pm. The affected area was for properties surrounding Narrabeen Lagoon. The SES says that once floodwaters at the lagoon reach 2 metres, the area will become isolated and “you may be trapped without power, water and other essential services and it may be too dangerous to rescue you”.

Two bodies were found in Coopers Creek stormwater canal in Wentworthville about 8.20am, believed to be 67-year-old Hemalathasolhyr Satchithanantham and her 34-year-old son, Bramooth.

The woman’s Mazda 3 was found in the same canal at the adjoining suburb of Wentworthville on Monday afternoon.

Strong winds sweeping across Sydney Harbour forced race officials to reduce today's racing program in the 2022 JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship from the scheduled two races, to one race, sailed over a specially designed storm course.

As the strength of the winds eased, the race got away in a 20-knot SSW wind and there was non-stop action throughout.

Once again, it was the strong Andoo team of Seve Jarvin, Matt Stenta and Sam Newton which proved to be the master of the conditions to record its third consecutive win from the three races sailed so far and leads the championship with a perfect score of three points.

Tech2 (Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake) also continued her consistency with three consecutive second placings behind Andoo, and only trails by three points in the overall standings.

In today's race, Andoo grabbed the lead after the early leaders capsized and raced away to win by 3m15s from Tech2 with Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price, Josh McKnight and Harry Hall) a further 3m5s back in third place.

Fisher & Paykel (Jordan Girdis) finished strongly over the final two legs of the course to come home in fourth place, ahead of Yandoo (John Winning) and Queensland's C-Tech (Dave Hayter).

Andoo has a score of 3 points, followed by Tech2 on 6 points, Rag & Famish Hotel on 12, Yandoo and Lazarus Capital Partners (Marcus Ashley-Jones) both on 23 and The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines (Aron Everett) and Fisher & Paykel both on 28 points.

Sean Langman's Noakesailing led the fleet at the windward mark in Rushcutters Bay closely followed by Andoo, Tech2, and Smeg (Michael Coxon).

Sean Langman's Noakesailing led the fleet at the windward mark in Rushcutters Bay closely followed by Andoo, Tech2, and Smeg (Michael Coxon).

Noakesailing and Tech2 showed great speed and opened up a break over the fleet but both capsized as they gybed into Chowder Bay, leaving Andoo with the lead, a lead which the team maintained throughout the course.

Andoo quickly opened up a break over Rag & Famish Hotel and Finport Finance (Keagan York) on the windward leg across the harbour to Rose Bay, then went further ahead after the two-sail reach back from Rose Bay to the bottom mark in Athol Bay.

The Rag and Finport Finance continued their battle behind the leader while Yandoo and Tech2 were beginning to move closer.

A bunch of skiffs including Balmain Slake (Henry Larkings),Fisher & Paykel, Black Swan (Luke Parkinson), The Oak, Noakes Youth (Tom Cunich), C-Tech and the German Black Knight team (Heinrich Von Bayern).

Andoo continued to dominate over the second lap of the course and scored a clear victory but it may have been a very interesting race for the win had Tech2 not capsized at the Chowder Bay mark.

The strong performance by the Fisher & Paykel team enabled it to take out the handicap section of the race.

Scheduled races and re-sail of any abandoned races will be sailed over the next four days:
        March 10, 11, 12 and 13

          Sydney Harbour

After several days of bad weather which forced the temporary abandonment of three races, the Australian 18 Footers League was able to conduct the scheduled Race 7 of the 2022 JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship on Sydney Harbour today, as well as Race 6, which could not be sailed yesterday.

Once the racing finally got under way, the spectators on the ferry and the spectator fleet on the water were treated to some spectacular action and exciting finishes in both races.

Once again the Andoo team of Seve Jarvin, Matt Stenta and Sam Newton proved invincible as its record now extends to an unbeaten run of five straight victories from the five races sailed so far.

With just four more races still to be sailed before the regatta concludes on Sunday, Andoo has a commanding lead over the nearest rival, Tech2 (Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake) and looks to have a strangle-hold on the 2022 title.

The first of the two races produced a chaotic start with four skiffs capsizing on the start line and the action didn't stop over the two laps of the course in the 15-21 knot SSE wind.

Andoo took the lead from the start (whenThe Oak Double Bay-4 Pines was rules out for an infringement) and was never headed over the entire course before going on to a 13s victory over an impressive Balmain Slake (Henry Larkings, Max Paul, Flynn Twomey) with Tech2 a further 8s back in third place.

          [/IMG]

Noakesailing (Sean Langman) finished fourth ahead of Ilve (Jono Whitty) and Smeg (Michael Coxon).

In the second race of the day, Andoo had to come from behind before going on to a 46s victory over the Western Australian Black Swan team of Luke Paarkinson, Grant Rollerson and Luke Payne, with Yandoo (John Winning, Fang Warren and Mike Kennedy) a further 51s back in third place.

Tech2 finished fourth, followed by Rag & Famish Hotel and The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines.

Andoo has a total of five points in the championship, followed by Tech2 on 13, Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price, Josh McKnight and Harry Hall) on 28, Yandoo on 40, Balmain Slake and defending champion Smeg (Michael Coxon) on 43.

In the early race, the battle behind the leader was exciting as the fleet raced downwind to the bottom mark in Taylor Bay.

Tech2 grabbed second place on the run from the German Black Knight team, led by Heinrich Von Bayern, then continued to hold on to second place until Balmain Slake produced a powerful finishing burst to take second place just metres from the finish line.

In the second race, the WA Black Swan team led over the first lap of the course before being run down just before the second windward mark but the team held on strongly to retain second place ahead of the experienced Yandoo team.

Two more races, (Races 3 and 4) which were unable to be sailed on Tuesday will now be sailed tomorrow with the final two races of the championship scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

Today's result sheets, progress point scores and photos from today's racing, are attached.

Scheduled races and re-sail of any abandoned races will be sailed over the next three days:
          March 11, 12 and 13

The Andoo team of Seve Jarvin, Matt Stenta and Sam Newton wrapped up the 2022 JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship with another brilliant win in Race 8 of the championship, which was sailed on Sydney Harbour today.

Andoo's victory today was the sixth from the eight races sailed so far and, along with her two second placings in the other two races, has an unbeatable lead with just one more race to be sailed tomorrow.

The overall points standing after today's race has Andoo on eight points (after discard), with the next closest Tech2 (Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake) on 19 points. Even when Andoo includes her worst score so far the team's total is only ten points.

After a tough battle with Tech2, particularly over the first lap, Andoo led for most of the course before crossing the finish line 54s ahead of Tech2 with Noakesailing (Sean Langman, Ed Powys and Josh Porebski) a further 3m10 back in third place.

Finport Finance (Keagan York) finished in fourth place, ahead of Lazarus Capital Partners (Marcus Ashley-Jones) and Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Steve Thomas).

After Andoo on eight points and Tech2 on 19 points, Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price) is in third place on 35 points, followed by Noakesailing on 42, Lazarus Capital Partners on 46 and defending Smeg Michael Coxon) team on 55 points.

On the first windward beat to the Beashel Buoy, the fleet chose a variety of courses in the 10-16 knots NE wind with Lazarus Capital Partners, Finport Finance, Smeg and Noakesailing prominent behind Andoo and Tech2.

At the windward mark, Andoo led Tech2 by just four boat lengths which was the fore-runner of a brilliant downwind battle to the wing mark off the southern end of Shark Island then the bottom mark off Clark Island, with just a few boat lengths separating the two teams.

The pair had opened up a big margin over the chasers which were headed by Finport Finance, Smeg, and a group including Noakesailing, Shaw and Partners and Lazarus Capital Partners.

WAs Black Swan (Luke Parkinson) was the best of the visiting team, in eighth place.

On the following beat back to the Beashel Buoy, Andoo was dominant as the champion team opened up a break of one minute over Tech2 and from that point the outcome looked obvious.

Over the last lap of the course, Tech2 reduced Andoo's lead back to 20s as the boats headed for home, but once again Andoo extended the margin to the final 54s.

Despite having to finish behind the winner, Tech2's performance was enough to take out the handicap section.
