First day of racing for the Maxi Yacht Capri Trophy

The first day of racing in the Rolex Capri Sailing Week saw the Race Committee wait for the breeze to stabilise before starting the first race of the event. At 2 p.m. a decisive south-southwesterly blowing at around 10-12 knots allowed one race to be held on the regatta course positioned just off the Bocche di Capri. At 2.30 p.m. the first windward-leeward race got underway on a course of around 8 miles, which the maxi yachts completed in just over an hour to see the fleet’s early leaders emerge. After calculating compensated time, the top yachts from race one were the 60-foot Blue Oyster, followed by Shirlaf, owned by Giuseppe Puttini, and Lorina 1895, owned by Jean-Pierre Barjon.

At 4:10 p.m. a second start was sounded on the same course, with the breeze now stable at 12-14 knots, and fixed at 245°. At the end of the first windward leg, the breeze shifted significantly to 270°, just as the weather models had predicted, forcing the committee to reposition the marks accordingly. This operation was carried out rapidly, thanks to the use of the new MarkSetBot robotic buoys, but the prompt course adjustment served for little in the end, as the breeze proceeded to die out just before the finish line, forcing the committee to cancel the second race of the day.

Worsening weather conditions are expected for tomorrow, due to a low-pressure area set to bring rough seas and strong gusts to the waters off Capri.

Among the new initiatives for this edition of the RCSW is remote management of the racecourse thanks to the use of MarkSetBot robotic race marks. These buoys use self-propelling GPS technology to position themselves in a specific location and hold that position, with no anchor, until instructed to move. With a user-friendly mobile interface, the repositioning options make course laying simple and precise in all conditions and, above all, without the need to have mark boats and personnel at sea.

Day 2 Reveals Another Glorious Day

Magnificent weather conditions graced the waters of Capri for the second day of racing in the Maxi Yacht Capri Trophy.

At 11 a.m. the Race Committee sounded the starting signal for a race of approximately 30 miles on a route that took the fleet from
Capri to a mark off Sorrento and past Punta Campanella, before rounding the island counterclockwise.
A breeze of 14 to 16 knots from the west accompanied the fleet on a fairly choppy sea.

Immediately after the start, Cippa Lippa X and Anywave took the lead for a match race that would last right to the finish line - which the two crossed just seconds apart.
It was Cippa Lippa X, Guido Paolo Gamucci's Mylius 60 CK, that clinched line honours, but had to wait for the calculation of the results in compensated time to confirm
their place in the rankings. The corrected time results, in fact, awarded victory to Frà Diavolo, the Mylius 60 owned by Vincenzo Adessi, who also moves to the top of the
overall leaderboard after two races. In second place today and second position overall is the Swan 601 Lorina 1895, owned by Jean-Pierre Barjon, while in third on both counts
is the Swan 65 Shirlaf, owned by Giuseppe Puttini and expertly guided by tactician Gabriele “Ganga” Bruni. The classification is also beginning to take shape in the separate
Performance and Classic classes: the first led by a trio composed of Frà Diavolo, Lorina 1895 and Cippa Lippa X, and the second headed by Shirlaf, Blue Oyster and Stella Maris

Racing continues tomorrow with the start of the third race scheduled for 11 a.m. and the weather forecast confirming more of the same ideal conditions, with westerly winds of 15 to 20 knots.

Meanwhile in Naples, a large fleet has begun to arrive for the ORC European Championship. The coming days will be dedicated to registrations and measurement checks ahead of Saturday, when the Regata dei Tre Golfi, also valid this year as the offshore race for the ORC Europeans, will set off at 7 p.m.

      Idyllic Capri Continues to Deliver

Another coastal race of approximately 30 miles was set for the third race of the Maxi Yacht Capri Trophy,
on a regatta course once again blessed with ideal sailing conditions

Another coastal race of approximately 30 miles was set for the third race of the Maxi Yacht Capri Trophy, on a regatta course
once again blessed with ideal sailing conditions. The westerly breeze blowing at 14 to 16 knots on the starting line allowed the
fastest boat to complete the course in just over 2 hours and 30 minutes.

After today’s start off Capri, the maxi yachts rounded an offset mark before turning for the second mark off Punta Campanella,
on the mainland, and proceeding to round the island clockwise before passing Punta Campanella for a second time and
heading for the finish line off Capri's Marina Grande. The racers were particularly appreciative of the excellent course management
under the watchful eye of the President of the Race Committee, Alfredo Ricci.

The star of the day was once again the Mylius 18E35 Frà Diavolo, owned by Vincenzo Adessi, who add precious points to their
lead in the general classification with today's victory.
Second place went to Luca Scoppa's Blue Oyster, under the guidance of tactician Roberto Ferrarese, while the French Swan 601, Lorina 1895, claimed third place.

After three days of racing, and with the first act of the Rolex Capri Sailing Week drawing to its conclusion tomorrow, the provisional overall classification in the two classes is as follows:

      Performance:

      Performance:

Frà Diavolo – Vincenzo Adessi – Yacht Club Gaeta

Lorina 1895 – Jean Pierre Barjon – Yacht Club de France

Cippa Lippa X – Guido Paolo Gamucci – Yacht Club Punta Ala

      Classic:

Blue Oyster – Luca Scoppa – Reale Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia

Shirlaf – Giuseppe Puttini – C.N. Marina di Alimuri

Stella Maris – Matteo Fossati – Viverelavela

A lighter breeze is forecast for tomorrow, and in all probability the maxis will compete on a windward-leeward course for the final day of racing in the Maxi Yacht Capri Trophy. Tomorrow afternoon the prize-giving ceremony for this first act dedicated to the maxi yachts will take place in Capri. Meanwhile in Naples, on the docks of the Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia, registrations and measurements are continuing for the ORC European Championship fleet.
