    This morning, in the unusual setting of the palace of Tokyo, the Gitana Team presented its Ultimate trimaran christened Maxi Edmond de Rothschild. A sailing boat under construction that we were able to visit this week in preview, guided by its future skipper, Sébastien Josse and the general manager of the team Cyril Dardashti. This boat whose program, developed over five years, will have as a highlight a participation in the round the world solo and race reserved for giant trimarans and whose departure will be given Brest in two years. And his ambition is nothing less than flying around the world!

    By entering the first of the vast halls of the Chantier Multiplast in Vannes, the visitor is seized by the gigantism. The boat that is built there is not ordinary! And the little smiles rogues displayed by Sébastien Josse and Cyril Dardashti are proof of this. Immediately, the two men placed themselves in front of the right stem of the central hull. And beyond the obvious narrowness of the lively works, a U-shaped hull, totally flat underneath and whose master-bau was so pushed back that it is at the level of the rear beam. Guillaume Verdier, the architect who signs this trimaran in the company of the design office of Gitana gave birth to a boat whose first ambition is to glide. Confirmation is provided by the two floats but especially the U-shape even more pronounced than the central shell, so that they end in a perfect rectangle at the end of a hull that reverses on its rear part. The assembly is evidently made of carbon and the reinforcements at the bottom of the three shells are composed of longitudinal beams along the entire length.

    The assembly of the boat currently in progress makes it possible to realize that the beams, particularly profiled, have small crosses at the request of the skipper to improve the passage in the sea. The floats are therefore very high with respect to the hull Central office.

    If this boat was officially presented in the framework of the Palais de Tokyo it is that its decoration was entrusted to the American street-artist Cleon Peterson. The owners of this machine, Ariane and Benjamin de Rothschild, in association with the Paris Museum of Modern Art, wanted to make it a work of art called "outside the walls". It is true that this Gypsy redesigned according to the channels of Peterson is very far from its classical traits. Like the car racing, with the Art Cars, decorated by renowned artists, this trimaran will be a sort of Art-Boat. And that gives breath and dimension to the competition sail.

    The Maxi Edmond de Rothschild , which began construction in October 2015, will be launched in July. It will then be aligned in the run of the Transat Jacques Vabre 2017 with Sébastien Josse and Thomas Rouxel. In 2018, he played the Route du Rhum before the world tour in Brest in 2019 and an attempt on the Jules Verne Trophy in 2020. Ambitious program for a boat without concession and totally atypical.

    We took advantage of the presentation of Gitana 17 in the basement of the Palais de Tokyo this Thursday in Paris, which developed urban art in the framework of the attractive "Lasco Project" to meet the naval architect Guillaume Verdier Of New Zealand. You are a member of the Emirates Team New Zealand design team. Will the developments on the foils of the Class AC influence your choices on the maxi Edmond de Rothschild?
    Guillaume Verdier: Of course! We have this chance with my team (Team Verdier) to have been able to do this work of clearing on the America's Cup. We do not go into the unknown, because besides the AC 45 Turbo then the Class AC, we were able to also rely on a very beautiful model that is MOD 70 equipped with foils. Not to mention the Gitana Team Studies Office under the direction of Antoine Koch, we are six on the design of maxi Edmond de Rothschild - Romaric Neyhousser, Hervé Penfornis, Morganne Schlumberger, Véronique Soulé, and a young New Zealander, Bobby Kleinschmidt, which we will hear very soon. The automatic control of the appendages of the Class AC allows to "move" the foil several times per second. It will be possible on the maxi Edmond de Rothschild?
    GV: Yes, that's the goal of course. Then it is more political, because the "Collective Ultim" does not authorize to this day the enslavement of the foils. But do not use this technology, it's a bit like going without flaps on a plane wing ... These boats deserve to be enslaved. What is the push in tons on foils on board such a multihull?
    GV: It's about 30 to 35 tons of thrust with the foils, and it's not nothing! But if flaps (flaps) are installed on the rudders, the push on the latter is limited to 200 kilos. The idea is to fly the boat in optimum conditions - medium wind and flat sea - but also to make it more "wise" in archimedean mode, especially in the sea.

    Love the graphics. Cleon Peterson is a well known graffiti/street artist in the vein of Keith Haring. It's great seeing street art starting to make its way onto boats.
