  • Mod 70' ARGO Demolishes Antigua To Newport Record

From Brad Read / Sail Newport

Jason Carroll's (Newport RI- USA) MOD 70 Argo and crew of 7 are streaking up the Western North Atlantic attempting the Antigua to Newport Sailing Record!

At their current pace, they could be crossing the finish line at Castle Hill by sundown this evening.

The current record is owned by MOD 70 Phaedo and is 3 days, 5h 54m 49s. To break the record, they will have to finish by 4AM Tomorrow Morning!

Go Argo!! Sail Newport will finish them at Castle Hill (from land). The boat and their team will then go to the Newport Shipyard to dock.

Team Argo finishes at 1903 36 edt. Unofficially CRUSHING the Antigua to Newport Record.

A new Antigua to Newport record in the books, subject to ratification by the World Sailing Speed Record Council. Our time of 3D 0H 15M shaves about 5 1/2 hours off the pervious mark set in 2015 by our MOD sistership "Phaedo". After pleasant and fast downwind sailing through the Caribbean Sea the trip became progressively more difficult.

Big downwind conditions east of Hatteras saw us pumping the brakes to keep things under control. A fairly large and disorganized sea state made this last night of the trip one to forget. But bright sunshine and flatter seas meant we could savor the final day and storm into Newport just ahead of the sunset.

The trip was not without incident as we had to stop the boat several times with rudder bearing and mainsail lock issues. Truly heroic work by Maxi and Alister to remediate the bearing issues by dangling off the back of the yacht in big seas.

Our thanks to John Reed at WSSRC and our start and finish line commissioners Julian Gildersleeve in Antigua and Brad Read in Newport. Thanks as well to our shore support team of Michael Barnes, Scott Tompkins and James Dodd. Finally well done and congratulations to the sailors,

Jason Carroll (owner/skipper), Brian Thomposon (navigator/sailing master), Chad Corning, Alister Richardson, Chris Maxted (boat captain), Pete Cumming, Thierry Fouchier and Charlie Ogletree.
A rest out of the water now for the yacht after a long overseas tour. Next up the Newport Bermuda Race in June.
