The Maxi Edmond de Rothschild is heading for Brest

Friday the 13th, lucky day? The Maxi Edmond de Rothschild left its Lorient base to reach Brest and the waters of the city of Ponant shortly after noon. The objective for Charles Caudrelier, Franck Cammas and their four crew is to get closer to Ouessant and the start line of the Jules Verne Trophy, which Gitana Team is once again aiming at. Indeed, weather opportunities seem to be opening up in the coming days but given the sea conditions expected at the tip of Brittany this weekend, the men of the recent winner of the Route du Rhum are playing it safe and will moor at the marina of the Ch?teau for a few hours, a few days… Concerning the precise timing of departure,
A departure tomorrow or next week?

Since the beginning of the week, the crew and the weather unit of the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild have observed a favorable situation for a start of the Jules Verne Trophy from this weekend. But this morning, if the latest observations were still optimistic for very good weather at the equator, they turned out to be more pessimistic for the South Atlantic and the passage times at the Cape of Good Hope.

This "uncertain" configuration is pushing the men of Gitana Team to position themselves in Brest, in order to be reactive and as close as possible to the virtual starting line materialized in Ouessant. The updating of the weather files in the evening but also tomorrow morning will determine whether the Caudrelier - Cammas duo and their team members set off tomorrow to attack the round the world or whether they will have to wait a few more days while waiting for a better window. Other opportunities were indeed mentioned from the middle of next week.

“That's the difficulty of these pre-departure periods! The desire to leave is obviously very present, but we are at the start of our stand-by and we must not rush. It will be difficult to achieve the record and we have to have an ambitious start window to have every chance,” recalled Charles Caudrelier. "The time criteria that we are looking for are dictated by the performances that we know are within reach of the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild, but also by analyzing the different sequences of Idec's record in 2017. The crossing of the equator and the time at the cape Needles are our first criteria. Beyond 5 days at the equator and 12 days at the tip of South Africa, this is no longer a very good window. This launch window is one of the only things we can really choose on this record attempt, so we apply ourselves. Especially since the time established by Idec sets the bar very high. ?

    Never two without three

After two attempts interrupted for technical problems, the men of Gitana Team are embarking on this third adventure with great desire, knowing that it could be the last for a long time given the announced schedule for the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild in the next few years, solo round the world race in 2024 in particular.

In 2021, during their second test on the Jules Verne Trophy, Charles Caudrelier, Franck Cammas and their team had made an impression and showed the potential of their mount by setting the best time of all time at the tip of South Africa. South, i.e. 11 days, 14 hours and 3 minutes at Cape Agulhas. But the breakage of a float rudder, which occurred at the entrance to the South Seas, had brutally put an end to this record attempt.

The next attempt will thus be the third for the men of Gitana Team who are tackling this planetary challenge with the same ambition: that of beating the record set by Idec in 2017 in 40 days 23 hours and 30 minutes. But aboard the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild , the six sailors also harbor a dream, that of circumnavigating the globe via the three capes, passing below the legendary 40-day mark.

An unchanged crew to aim for this planetary record

There will be six of them setting off aboard the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild to attack the Jules Verne Trophy. Charles Caudrelier, recent winner of the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe in Ultim, finds his partner Franck Cammas at the helm of the 32-meter giant. This duo will be able to rely on the experience and skills of the four sailors who have accompanied them since 2019 in crewed races: Morgan Lagravi?re, Yann Riou, David Boileau and Erwan Israel. Ashore, Marcel van Triest is back in the routing cell. The 7th man as we call him is a great specialist in world tours and he is notably the double holder of the Jules Verne Trophy, including the current record in 40 days 23 hours and 30 minutes.
