Photographer and Videographer David Smith Has Started A Project Regarding the Stars
About this project:
In 1911 the first 22 of what were to become known as the International Star Class racing yachts were completed by my Great Grand Uncle Isaac Edgar "Ike" Smith at his boatyard in Port Washington, NY on Long Island.
I grew up hearing about Uncle Ike from my Dad, who learned how to build and repair rowboats from him as a kid, but all I knew was that he was a boat builder and thought all he built was rowboats.
When I started researching the family history a few years ago I discovered Ike's place in the genesis of the Star Class. Not only did he build the first 22 official Star, he went on to build 60 more before he retired in the mid 1920's.
My ultimate goal is a 1 to 1 1/2 hour film about the history of the Stars and this small project is phase 1.
The Stars have been sailed in every Olympics since 1932, except for 1976, and will be sailed in the London Olympics in 2012.
The ISAF is considering eliminating the men's keelboats from the 2016 Olympics so this may be the last Olympic campaign for these Star sailors.
There are 57 Star teams registered for this years OCR, among them many previous Olympic competitors including 2 time Gold medalist skipper Mark Reynolds (USA) and the 2 time Gold medal winning team of Torben Grael and Marcelo Ferreira (BRA).
I plan to interview as many Star competitors as possible along with competitors participating in the other classes in the regatta.
