Fugu fixed!
Good day today as i fixed tear in main and rehoisted at noon. Pelagic started working again 2am had been hand steering as tiller pilot was not able to handle
With AP working i could finally sleep ! 6 hours of it! Despite damp everything! Conditions finally easing enough to enjoy rather than be a concern

Day 3 Summary – The windy reach lives up to its name
Day 3 found our racers gearing up for a wild ride on what’s known as “the windy reach.” The back of the fleet crawled out of the southerly surge and the front of the fleet grew with the faster, sportier boats, previously becalmed, closing the gap on the original three leaders in reported 25-30 kt winds. JouJou is still splitting the difference between Riff Rider to the north and Crinan II to the south. It will be interesting to see the effect of latitude. Double Espresso is one of those surfing machines now caught up to the three leaders with Nightmare and Passages very close behind. Rainbow, the sole multihull, is holding his own and Kyntanna is throwing her size around surging to the south. The remainder are roughly clustered together, but still moving at a clip. We have reports of sea sickness, astronaut eating, and only a little carnage so far, a boom vang and a couple of autopilots, not too bad overall. The sailors are settling in to sailing, as the winds continue.

Jacqueline starts to get sea legs…

triple reef came out this morning as aws dropped into high teens. i always debate this decision because its a PIA to put the reef back in if you misjudged conditions up ahead. but i couldnt stand seeing SOG drop below 6 kts so out it went and so far so good. gusting to 24/25 but she seems to be happy in the somewhat calmer seastate this morning.
this is the first morning i have felt reasonably decent. not seasick, just needed to get into the groove. my morning cup of coffee actually felt the treat. that is a good indication life is shaping up and that i have departed from the land of the walking dead.
oh yea, got the vang strap in place and rigged so damage control is fully up to date this morning.
one other note, i saw 140 watts from my SAs yesterday afternoon. that is fantastic performance. really happy with that.

Jaqueline keeps riding the freight train
man, the last 36 hours have been like riding the freight train to Omaha. it just keeps going and going. Good solid 20 knots plus quartering wave train does wonders for progress, not so great for comfort. i have spent a lot more time in the cabin on this race so far. i monitor the world from a perch at the top of the companionway steps. thank God for APs.
i lost control of the flag halyard yesterday. poor seamanship on my part not tying it down properly. seems harmless but watched it start to wrap around and tangle halyards aloft and got my ass in gear to go forward and try to retrieve it. got very lucky and got a hand on it. all is good. just shows how the smallest error in prep can lead to bad things.

Greetings from the void.
It’s been a rough few days getting acclimated to life at sea.
At first I thought the scopolamine patch wasn’t working, so I took some Dramamine. That helped. Later I found the patch stuck to my coat.
Got some liquids back in me and finally some food this evening. Titia made beans and rice and put it in seal a meal bags that I heated in the jetboil and at like astronaut food. Yum!
Swell is on starboard beam and wind is at 140. We’re making 7.5 sog.

Dark Horse Update 6.25.18

7:55 PM PST – The wind steadily built last night, by morning roll call it started blowing above 30, so I reefed down even more and went along for the ride. The seas didn’t build too much, and the wind was steady out of the north all day. I spent the morning standing by the mast, which was pretty comfortable and just enjoyed the seas. My boat has stayed dry since the start (thanks to the dodger) and all systems were working like they were supposed to. I’m starting to remember why I started on this journey in the first place. For the first time in a long time I was able to be in the moment.
Expecting the seas and wind to build last night, I slept in half of my drysuit. Getting that thing on in a very little boat is quite a sight. I think it should be a new dance move, combination of the worm and a seizure.
I am really enjoying having the SSB. Even though the check ins are short, there’s a sense of community forming, which I am enjoying. I ate a little jerky and some crackers and feeling better. Now bring on the warm tropical waters!

Decision Time for Philippe

I’m reaching “Point A” (130W) and need to decide what to do next. It’s not clear cut! Barometric pressure has risen to 1023 mbar and weather charts show the high weakening; I may already be too far North. I’ve ran a few weather routings and they have me come back North over the rhumb line from where I am. Winds have been variable between 15 and 25 kts. I still have two reefs and the #3. This is going to be slow soon; I wonder if other skippers already have a spinnaker up.
Decisions!
I am also running low on the batteries. I’ve switched to charging one battery at a time and using the other one. I haven’t seen the sun more then 5 minutes today.
We’re still very wet here but the water is warmer and I’ve seen a bit of wildlife: a few small fishes jumping and a couple of birds.
And I think I have slept an hour! I feel good although energy level is not very high and I’m still lightly queezy.
I really enjoyed the fast surfing in deep blue water. I love it when DE sails fast. Being here is not comfortable but it is a lot of fun

things have calmed down a bit windwise we are either side of 20 kts, sun is out SAs are cranking, life is good. havent gotten around to the vang bale yet but will have to bite the bullet before the wind starts to shift east.

First significant failure
6.25.18 morning
first significant failure aboard Jacqueline. boom can’t bale has broken once again. very foolish of me. I could have had Svendsons make me a new one, instead I had a welder repair the broken bale. bad decision. I have materials aboard to replace bale with strap but will await break in weather. am not keen on a stand up repair on the sidedeck in 25 to 30 kts and heavy seaway.

Day 2 Summary- 3 break and 3 break away
Sunday saw a thinning of sorts. Riff Rider, who went West with very little southing picked up the synoptic breeze first and largely escaped what would become the slow zone. Fast on his stern were JouJou, and Crinan II, who, both a little more south, managed to mostly escape the southerly surge and with over ground speeds from 7 – 11 kts, the three surged ahead of those less fortunate.
Meanwhile, LIBRA, delayed due to autopilot issues, decided to drop out and the sea had it’s way with Mouton Noir and Elizabeth Ann, who both retired to the shores with equipment issues. We are down to 16.
The rest of this sixteen not rocketing in the synoptics, doddled about in that southerly surge, napping, cursing, trading grey poupon, reflecting on strategy, napping again, cursing again, waiting…
As the night fell, mother nature took pity on them and reached her fingers down to tickle the boats, one by one, and poked each in the direction of the finish. The breeze started picking up, as did speed, and boat by boat, the fleet started moving past the surge into solid northwesterlies. Right now it looks like good breeze all the way. Will it hold?

2nd Morning at Sea for Double Ex
We went from 2.5 to 25 kts of wind, from lumpy seas to a well formed swell. It’s not yet at a great angle but we’re surfing here and there. The barometer has been rising steadily to 1020 now.
Before the night I dropped to two reefs. I’m not steering at all and spend most of my time in the pipe berth. I’ll have to keep an eye on the batteries. It’s cloudy and I may have to use the generator, which in these conditions is going to be difficult. I’m drinking but eating very little; radishes mostly.
The boat seems to be doing fine and the skipper too.
And now TMI again: I was tipped over when using the urinal …

11:33 pm from Double Espresso to SledDog
6.23.18
In the low I had to sail 330 m to make wind, basically a long port tack. I was a little late catching the shift but went back to starboard in light winds. The old .5 spinnaker helped keep speed up but when the wind came back up things went a little wrong. Nothing broke.
I’m now under two reefs and still the 3, mostly pointing straight at point a doing good speed.
I’m still lightly seasick, feeling queezy.

Jacqueline’s into the breeze
Got into something more agreeable for about 15 minutes. It quickly built into something disagreeable at the other end of the spectrum. Blowing 25 to 30 tws with sea state to suit. By God we are going fast though. That’s nice.
