  • Ronnie Simpson Dismasted In South Atlantic

It is with a very heavy heart that we have to write this update. At approximately 0200 UTC, Ronnie Simpson blew up at Shipyard Brewing.
An exasperated Ronnie Simpson notes the following:

He was racing to stay ahead of a very deep depression when the boat launched off a massive wave.
He has cut most of the rig away, and deployed a drogue to keep the stern to the seas and activated his epirb and requested a rescue...

He has not enough fuel or horsepower to get to shore under his own power...
With nasty storm headed in 36 hours but ships in the vicinity, Ronnie is at the mercy of other mariners...

He is concerned about the forecasted storm with 23 foot seas... A Pakistani ship is diverting to his aide! Should arrive in 6-7 hours... hopefully before nightfall...

Ronnie is ok and uninjured but the wind and waves are making the situation pretty critical. It is approximately 650 nautical miles east-southeast from Buenos Aires. Ronnie is in contact with the Coast Guard, he has deployed one of his Epirbs. It was sailing east for days to get away from the worst of a storm it will hit in 24-36 hours.

Therefore, he is rightly concerned about the negative climate development in his area. At the time of dismasting, it was heading east when the boat took off from a wave and lost the rig to impact with the water. There are several videos posted on his official Instagram profile @captainron_official that we have also broadcasted on our channels, we are waiting for more information about the action plan with the rescue center. Not in immediate danger, but clearly the situation is complicated by the weather forecast.

Bulk Carrier Sakizaya Youth of Taiwanese ownership was headed for Necochea, Argentina, after a voyage from Australia to India and Pakistan. The carrier, under the coordination of MRCC Argentina has altered course effectively turning back towards Ronnie at 14 knots speed with an ETA of approximately 22:00 UTC, hopefully before sunset local time. There should be enough time, whether Ronnie is picked up tonight or tomorrow morning, ahead of the expected heavy seas. We’ll keep you posted.

First of all we would like to reassure everyone that, at present, Ronnie is safe and well, he has disconnected all the rigging that was becoming a threat to the integrity of the hull and had to get rid of it. The reason for a request for assistance does not lie with the immediate situation, which despite wind and waves is still manageable, but with the storm developing and heading towards Ronnie’s position tomorrow.

This storm is forecast to bring seas of up to 8 meters at its worst but hopefully a little less in his position, around 6.5m. For this reason, the situation could deteriorate and Ronnie has requested assistance. MRCC Argentina is responsible for coordination of any Search and Rescue Operation in those waters and as organisers we are in contact to provided any information they request, such as SAR identification photos, vessel details and characteristics and liaise with any other party requesting information such as the US Coast Guard, given the vessel has a US flag.

We have instructed the provider of the event satellite trackers to increase the reporting frequency of Shipyard Brewing to every 15′. At present, we are waiting for further details from MRCC Argentina who are in the process of contacting commercial vessels in the proximity of Ronnie’s position. We don’t have full access to all they information they do, but we understand that at present there appear to be no ships within a reasonable radius heading towards or that could be routed to his position.

We have to wait for the SAR centre to coordinate the operation. As a precautionary measure we have alerted Andrea Mura on Vento di Sardegna of the situation, he is still 600 nautical miles away and it would take him at the very least 48 hours to reach the position. Nonetheless we are grateful to Andrea for giving immediate and unconditional availability to help should it become necessary.

"We could not be happier in relaying the news that Ronnie Simpson is safe and well and has boarded the Taiwanese ship SAKIZAYA YOUTH. We can only imagine the mix of relief and sadness as Ronnie had to bid his last farewell to Sparrow, aka Shipyard Brewing, his companion in this amazing journey by the bitter ending but the countless amazing memories."
