Sailing life on the bay begins at 25 kts!

Hell. Survival mode begins at 25 knots. I have lots of experience sailing right in the midst of that all that and I'll say plainly right here that I like light air sailing too.

I'm telling ya, after this spring, I'm OUT of my marina at Oyster Point, right next to SFO.

If it ain't a northerly denying me Vallejo

It's a gear busting southerly that makes it pretty damn hard to get back after the racing.

If it ain't that - it's 35 knots out of the west that keep me quivering in my slip, not knowing if I can get out of the fairway without getting blown into the boats downwind.

I'm moving into Marina Bay sometime this week.

Pops, I kept a boat at Marina Bay (Richmond) for several years. It's windy (though not as much as you get now), cold, and you can listen to semi-automatic gunfire on Saturday nights.

At least a couple of our multis are at Emery Cove - have you checked there? The Estuary is the best but I don't know how many slips are available for multis.

Sad to lose an active sailor out of OP, HapaPops. Know that this is historically the windiest month out of the year here - and during wintertime lulls - which are most of the time of course - sometimes it seems like the only sailing you can get in the whole south bay is right off the breakwater here.

I think the really crazy people are those who sail out of Berkeley. I've only been there a few times, but even though the prevailing westerly seems to die down a bit near the shore, as soon as you leave the breakwater you've got nasty windwave and heavy breeze right on the nose... and the malignant ruins of the pier which almost provided the means for me to get myself killed once.

Yep, sailed out of Berkeley as well for a season. You have to be on your game as soon as you reach the breakwater - one tack and you're in the Slot. That makes me wonder about Emery Cove - I assume you have to motor out its narrow channel since it's straight upwind. Plus both Berkeley and Emeryville can be tough to reach by car from any direction.

Had an Express 37 in Emeryville (private side)- and it was sometimes a very tough slog out of that channel. Went to check out the new layout of the public side and they do have a side-tie multihull arrangement now - which looks doable. I'm concerned about getting out that channel and keeping the outboard in the water while I try to do it.

I agree that Alameda would be ideal - but none of the marinas there have space and I've not yet decided to bite the bullet and start folding/unfolding regularly.

I sure like the warmth there.

It's been the coldest, windiest springs I can recall in quite some time. But the South Bay turns into a turlet on big south /south east days for sure...

It's more the reverberation off all the walls which messes things up...having lots of free board certainly is a bitch getting in and out of OP on windy days...

Hope they have some nice marina plans for Hunters Point in the rejuvenation plans, could be ideal for peninsula/ south bay dwellers...Rates are going up in Berkeley

                    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...BAM71JG4N1.DTL

And it is at the receiving end of the slot, never seems to warm up there in the summer....

Nose Strings has been a inhabitant of Marina Bay, he can clue you in on the patterns there...crack and hookers seem to be cheap...

HP would be a great place for a marina because it is usually so sheltered from prevailing winds... and I've long thought it would be cool if the historic graving docks could be incorporated into such a facility. All it would require is a breakwater across the front and maybe - or maybe not - a bit of dredging, though there wouldn't be a whole lot of slips created that way.

Unfortunately, I think a much likelier scenario is taking over one of my favorite spots to drop the hook: Candlestick Park cove.

As for the reverberation phenomenon, yes. Puts me in mind of a pleasant rainy-day springtime sail back from TI one morning a couple years ago. I was close-reaching in moderate ESE winds the whole way against an ebb, but just when I was off the Brisbane marina breakwater - and in the early flood - the wind piped up and the wind waves made me feel like I was boating inside a washing machine. It was like I was on one of those mechanical bulls... just as I was on deck putting the main away.

                        Marina Bay winds

It's currently blowing about 15 out of the west-southwest. It does that pretty much every day. Starts about 10, dies out slowly. Sometimes it's gone by 6, more often than not it blows until the sun goes down. MBYH is only a block from the RPD main station, so the 'hood itself is really safe. Marina is clean and well kept since the new harbormaster came aboard two years ago and kicked out the derelicts on E and F docks. Our only real complaint is the lack of depth in the entrance channel. We've been due for dredging for two years now, and some of us need a zero tide or better just to get out of here. The marina itself is deeper than hell.

About the time you posted that it was still a good 20+ at Oyster Point. Looking forward to some warmth, relatively light breezes and a short haul to the main bay. Given I can draft diddly squat if I so choose, I can actually duck in behind Brooks Isle.

I'm giving up my slip at oyster tomorrow or Thursday. It was always a temp place till I got a trailer. I got a trailer now but it's not ready but I am out of oyster. So many times in the last two months I would have gone out sailing but couldn't safely get in and out of the marina.
Going to Redwood City for a week or two the to Alameda.
