DHF 2012 anyone? Sat. March 31st Entry deadline Skippers' meeting Wed March 28th 7:30
We tried to make the start mostly to watch the spectacle. But shredded the jib going across a pretty heavy south bay. Couldn't motor into that shit, so we are tucked in South Beach waiting for a window to head back.
My understanding is that if the Coast Guard has to rescue you off your boat, they will never save the vessel, just you, no matter what equipment they use.
We pulled the pin last night after careful consideration of the scenario that got us around the island in the late afternoon, but with the forecast 20' swell and 8' wind waves closing the bar completely on our return and trapping us outside overnight.
More like "We aren't sending our guys out there in a 47' MLB, so have fun in your sailboat."
From Military.com:
The 47' MLB is of an all aluminum construction, is capable of operating in 20' breaking seas and winds of 60 knots, and can survive impacts at three times the force of gravity. The 47' MLB is self righting, and can return to an upright, operational configuration within 10 seconds, whether "pitch-polled" (rolled fore and aft) or rolled into swells (rolled across the boat's beam.) In addition, the MLB is self-bailing and its machinery is not subject to operational interruption, even while inverted. The boat can be operated from both an exposed bridge (offering better visibility in rescue situations) or from the enclosed pilothouse (to limit crew fatigue during extended surf operations.) To mitigate the pounding effects associated with surf operations, the 47' MLB incorporates shock absorbing crew seats. These seats feature 360 degrees of rotation, lap belts, armrests, and lumbar supports. The survivor compartment is also watertight and climate-controlled, for survivor safety, comfort, and medical recovery.
