It will be interesting to hear how that discussion went down. I assume the CG didn't withdraw the permit but they certainly sent a clear message.
they didn't send. We agreed to ask and to communicate.
    We did that.

We have been having a pretty comprehensive discussion with the CG in the month or so prior to the race. In part because there was some concern within the club that older history may be fading from memory or unknown to newer sailors and CG personnel. Personally I had a concern that the recent requirements of EPIRBS, which assist in efficiency/effectiveness of SAR, may also result in a decrease in self sufficiency/preparedness/capability of (some) sailors. We actually made an effort to educate the CG on the history of the race and to learn CG capability and response capability. The panpan incident during DHLS provided an interesting educational discussion about sailing instructions and responses by RC/CG. LtCmndr DesaRae Jantzen (check the signature on your permit) spoke at the skippers meeting and we collaborated with a local SAR satisfied customer whose basket ride video is on BAMA DHF page. We all know the water is cold and epirbs are the panic button. Sobering to hear a real world incident as it unfolded over 3 hrs with the CG perspective too.

We mutually agreed on a protocol in advance. It was a positive and collaborative process. The bigger concern was that people would not understand what the weather threat might be so social media and direct emails were employed to get the message out. I'll have to say I was impressed with the social conscience of the sailing community in policing ourselves and consulting their friends. The other concern would be the other people (non DHF) caught outside consuming assets that would not be available/delayed to a DHF racer if the need arised. An example last year was that commercial vessel sinking off ocean beach. I watched the helos and boats do search patterns for hours while we also attempted to track down a retired racer (if you retire- please try repeatedly to get a confirmation from the RC that they know you retired).

The other concern would be severity of conditions and what assets would be deployable in those conditions. We had the conversation with the CG prior to the start as agreed and educated the racers before the start. Collaborative realistic communication/effort.

    cheers
    bob

Sounds like good communication/understanding that made a "permit" irrelevant. Good job on both sides.

I departed Lands End at 4:45, Sea Stig was the last boat I saw... took another look from the Cliff House and saw nothing...things appeared to be mellowing from what they they were between 2:00pm and 3:30 PM
