  • Well, if you look at at it, doublehanded, those were pretty badass boats. Add Stan Honey doing the thinking, and you have a pretty nice ride. Doesn't take a bit away from you and Gabe. staring at the Bar, and saying, ok, let's do this!

You did not have the weather information overload you do now with the web, just a real lousy interpretation from local
weather folk and the wx radio forecast, so fear did not seem to creep in so quickly.
also you didn't have a negative sensationalism media environment that rapidly propagated around the world.... and lawyers...lots of lawyers ready with lawsuits.

Remember last year? That commercial vessel off ocean beach? The DHF got the blame real time. Consumed a lot of CG assets for hrs. Not that bad a condition either

"Sustained winds of 25 mph and gusts up to 45 mph Saturday contributed to the heavy seas, according to the Coast Guard."

        • '99 was also a bad year.... dismastings, F31 Pitchpole on the breaking backside of the Farallones (washed up on the northern Channel Islands). Two boats went into the breakers and saved those lucky souls and could have easily lost theirs attempting the rescue. Luck was not on Harvey's side that day and a breaking wave took a J/29 for a full on tumble in heavy downwind running in very steep, huge, seas. I was within a mile or two at that time and the conditions were nerve racking. Both crew were tethered and conscious after the roll on the now stricken vessel (broken boom, etc at that point). Crew off the beam of the boat got back aboard the boat while it was pitching, surfing sideway down breaking waves but when he got to Harvey he was unconscious. A fellow racer saw the situation unfold and hailed the USGC and notified then that a Pilot boat was close by. Despite his attempts Harvey could not be brought onboard the J/29 by the crew and that would not have gotten him to the help he needed anyway at that point. In a mental image that still haunts me when I heard it 1st hand, Harvey was cut loose from the sailboat and picked up by the Pilot boat who tried to revive him to no avail. Learned from this unfortunate incident was that long tethers attached to jacklines that terminate near the stern means you'll be dragging feet behind the stern.

              2 stories here http://www.sfbama.org/fs/index.html

Gary still gets a little anxious remembering/thinking about it.
Aaron Lee (M24) is friends with the survivor of the J29 and freely offers advice.

You can google and get more info from the above.

2001 saw 40 knots late afternoon. 1984 was not as bad- but bad enough

                    • Update- GPS tracks, Shirt sizes etc

Sorry for the delay in the awards. We had several personal/family issues in those that were involved. We also had difficulties in getting GPS tracks which we wanted to include in the T shirts design which hopefully you'll like.

                          Any suggestions on time?
