With an order of "Standing Down" by the USCG following the Low Speed Chase tragedy in force, the Nor Cal OYRA fleet showed up regardless for a truncated version of the Duxship, which usually sails out the Gate, heads up to the Duxbury Reef Buoy then down to the SF Entrance Buoy before returning to SF.

Settling for a course which took the fleet outside the Gate, around Bonita Buoy then back inside the Gate, to YRA 8 then finishing inside the Estuary at the Encinal Yacht Club, was a far cry from real ocean racing, and one might have expected a complete defection, yet, for the most part, most took it in stride.

A 3.3 knot ebb took the boats out for a very quick ride, despite the near ghosting conditons at the start, and with plenty of breeze just outside the bridge, playing the edges brought the fleet back in in rapid fashion.
Gary Troxels Beneteau 423' Tiki-J Finds pressure near Treasure Island
The SW breeze filled in just in time to give most boats plenty of SMG along the southern flank of Angel Island and over to YRA, then things got interesting.

Wayne Lampreys Quest 33 "Rhum Boogie" was on of several who opted for the inland option sailing in the lee if Treasure Island, which can lead into a death hole behind Yerba Buena, this time, it payed off.
"Just Happy To Be Here" pretty much sums up the mood on the Cal 20 "Can o' Whoopass" which suffered major damage just a couple weeks earlier. Here Richard Von Ehrenkrook points to the point of impact which was miraculously repaired by
Gordy Nash. The Can was able to carry the kite all the way to the EYC!
Sometimes timing is everything, as Mark Nuemans Catalina 36 "Seabiscuit" and Phil Mummah's Gibsea 43 No Ka Oi found out. The building seabreeze arrive just in time to give them all they could handle! The 1st to finish was Rob Barton's Andrews 56' Cipango followed closely by by SC 50 "Deception", 1D35 "Dark and Stormy" NM Custom "Quiver" & IMX 38' "Hawkeye" shortly after noon. That's rather early for an ocean race, and leaves lots of time for honey do lists at home. The smart sailors took advantage of Jim Quanci's generous offer of a free keg at the Encinal Yacht Club where they had time to chat with fellow sailors, enjoy some brilliant sun and relax, another rarity in the OYRA circuit!
