  • April 13th: InterClub, Woodies Wheeler and more

The weekend on SF Bay offered plenty to do and see. If you weren't at the Strictly Sail, selling, buying, looking or just relaxing and BS'ing with some other sailors.
The 1st installment involves the Interclub Regatta, a 6 races series with 10 clubs and organizations combining efforts to spread the load and the love.

Saturdays South Bay event was a 13.25 miler for 5 of the divisions and what we'll call a 14 miler for the Multihullers. Sporting his still looking new UK sails,
and despite having a former 14' and weta crew tugging on the sheets, Chris Harvey out witted and out lasted the rest of the fleet to gather his 1st pickle dish of the young season...

The 8 boat Catalina 34' division was won by David Sanner on Queimada shown here leading Page Van Loben Sels's All Hail. Yes it was light at the start, but the breeze kick in significantly in the afternoon, topping out near 50 mph at SFO and 63 mph @ Point Reyes Lighthouse!

The Multi 23's 1st matchup since Rites Of Spring, earned Greg Mitchell a 3rd, despite lacking sail area and water line of the larger tris.
"We hot hosed up wind but made up for it down wind" Reports Greg

Rafi Yahalom' "Looking Good" lives up to here moniker!

Steve And Jocelyn Swanson "Zingara" the Islander 36' should not be confused with Zingaro, the Santana 22, finds the freshing breeze on the 1st windward leg.

    Man Overboard Drill

Dave MacEwen and crew on the SC 52' Lucky Duck took advantage of the weekend to practice their MOB drills. The team will be participating in several offshore events this summer, and on the anniversary of the Farallones disaster of last season, it was an apropos time to strive towards the goal of keeping up with preparedness practice!

A quick refresher for those concerned, the above frame, a crew loses balance and of the stern

"Man Overboard" is yelled and the crew quickly begins the process. The life ring is deployed and a sentry is positioned to keep the MOB in sight.

Kite is quickly doused, engine started and boat prepares to come about.

The MOB's job is to remain calm, blow whistle and make him or herself as visible as possible.

Utilizing a lifesling, the boat rounds the MOB much the same as a ski boat does when retrieving a skier or wakeboarder, bing the line to the MOB in the process

Quickly donning the sling while there is slack is MUCH easier than attemping while being dragged through the water, especially in breeze on conditions and open ocean swell!

Once winched to the side of the boat, a halyard is attached and the lifting begins!

Happy Happy , Joy Joy! The crew is once again complete!

Feel free to share this post to others, and for petes sake...get out there and practice your own MOB drills!

      Wheeler Buoy Races

Saturday's Wheeler Buoy Races took most of the fleets out of the flats and midbay in moderate to light conditions, the wind waiting until the 3rd and final race was finished before filling in completely. Sunday's pursuit was breeze on early and stayed with the fleet throughout, providing for a quick and spirited afternoon.

      Daniel Alvarez gives his thoughts:

Great time and great racing today at the Wheeler. After moderate conditions for the buoy racing yesterday, today we saw big breeze for the pursuit. Kudos to the little J boat that managed to keep everyone behind them. The finish was classic pursuit, with the top 5 finishers suddenly converging at the finish line, finishing within seconds of each other. We rounded the leeward mark second behind the J, but couldn't catch them in the short upwind to the finish. And we didn't put enough distance between us and the E-37 to fend them off before the finish (though perhaps a bit more aggressive tactics might have saved it).

The highlight by far was hooking up to the stern wake of Bodacious+ after they passed us to windward and ride that all the way to Alcatraz, literally a few feet from their stern. Sure their hiking crew got a good show for a while. The run, was a classic JetStream run in the 14-19 range. Flawless crew work as usual and we ended up with a podium finish in third.

Topped that with a spinnaker run all the way down the Estuary and at the dock before 4.

"Bodacious" crosses tack with "Wicked" during race 3 on Saturday

      There is no shame here!

        Woodie Wonderland

Over on the City Front, The Wooden Boat Association got it's 2013 Season off to a roaring start with IOD's, Knaars, Folkboats, Bears and Birds mixing things up in freshening wind on the City Front.

Working the building ebb on the shore and the remaining flood in the middle, the teams
provided eye candy for beach goers and tourist alike, dancing along the shoreline so close they could smell the coconut oil.

The woodies love their boats and dedicate a large amount of time and money keeping them up and operating in bristol & competitive condition. They have 6 more races scheduled this summer, Check em out!
