  • Damn California Nanny State!

Scenario, I want to take my 9 & 7 year old girls out for a warm day in fresh water. Toys are an El Toro and a SUP.

I was turned away from Del Valle - but not through any of their fault, they had to close the ramp due to a broken water (or sewer?) main.

Off to Quarry Lake in Fremont. Nice folks, warm fresh water, nice breeze. We launch the boats (and a 2nd el toro with his 11 year old son) and we're out capsizing, jumping off the SUP, pretty much just enjoying ourselves, when Ranger Rick comes over, and in a nice enough way, says the only "water contact" allowed was in the roped off swimming beach. WTF? I suppose the city of fremont thinks there some sort of liability if one of my kids drowns under my supervision.

So - where to go? There are plenty of cold, saltwater spots, but I want a warm freshwater one - within say 90 minutes of SFO. And no, I won't go to Clear Lake. Somewhere up in the delta maybe? It can't be too windy as my stubborn little 7 year old only wants to sail the El Toro solo - so it needs to be a place where she can capsize to her hearts content. Oh, and if anyone knows of an Opti for sale, I'm in the market.

Try Lexington or Loch Lomond up highway 17, or Contra Loma in Antioch. Maybe Shadow Cliffs in Livermore.

Unsure if they allow "water contact" per se, but I think I have seen wind surfers on them.

And there is always Berryessa or the lagoon off 80 before Vacaville

Sounds like PAR for the course at Quarry Lakes. Too many "doos" and don'ts". Lake Elizabeth is basically a goose poop pond.

Yeah, Elisabeth, Shoreline are both nasty feces infected nasty little ponds. I'll try Del Valle again - but they have something called a "$50 capsize charge" - I thought that was only for the rental boats where they had to come and pick you up, but is that also for just plain playing on water toys? Guess I should head up to one of the delta boat launches.

Well, this locks out all the Santa Clara reservoirs… I suppose I could drive around Foster City lagoon and re-connect with it...

Lake Merritt, you have incentive not to fall in.

But that's just it. I WANT them to fall in. My oldest has a fear of capsizing that I want to work through. Kids(and adults) get very comfortable with little boats heeling if they know that a capsize is no big deal.

That's how I learned; by playing around in our Laser in the FC Lagoons(we had a waterfront home in FC). We'd beat the heck out that boat: flip it, right it, almost flip it, sail it backwards, etc. Having the confidence to know that flipping the boat is no big deal - soon you learn you can capsize and not even get wet!

But yeah, I hear you, my daughter is that way, scared to heal the boat. I try to show her it's no big deal but that's just the way she is. Now, if it's a cheerleader move, such as being the "flyer" on the squad - No Problem!

Here's the fine print for East Bay:

                            Boating Regulations:
                            Capsized boat charge--$50

And the idea of the reservoirs was to have nice, fresh, warm water. But we're going to go play in the FC Lagoon. Doesn't have a beach, but I don't think they care if we touch the water.

use the boat ramp at the small dog park, a little more sheltered and friendly than ryan park/main lagoon
