They take entries up to Friday. They said this count is about the same as the last two years but way down from 40+ in years past.

It used to be that you could just sign up and do it. Now you have to sign up, move a bunch of safety stuff onto your boat, get one of you trained, and then do it. Just a lot of overhead that requires advanced planning. Some people are put off by the need to plan.

I'm hoping to do the crewed Farallons this year, but it's a weekend of work to convert my boat from lightweight buoy racing to the offshore spec - masthead antenna etc. Not to mention a lot of one-time money to upgrade radios to DSC/GPS this year. The added requirements for offshore make doing both inshore and offshore in the same season more of a challenge. Some folks won't bother.

That 0900 start time seems a bit unnecessary for such a short race...

max ebb. but yes, one hour later would be nice to sleep in and not make it soooo easy to get to the bucket.

Given how unfriendly things are to 3KSBs, and the long delivery....

Top dogs in the 3 fleets...
VERY fast race, despite light air at start.
Current strong enough to carry boats out gate, wind built from north 1st,
20-25, good ride to Bonita, then lightened up.
Jim Antrim on Condor had a plane to catch so they turned around early...

                            more later

Saw smoke over the Tiburon Peninsula yesterday...you can see it in the front of Elan's bow here..

(04-05) 18:39 PDT Tiburon -- Eight people were rescued Saturday after jumping from their burning boat off the coast of Tiburon.

At 12:40 p.m., the Coast Guard received a call from the riders of a 28-foot power boat about a half-mile off the coast of Tiburon, said Coast Guard Lt. Corinne Gaines. They reported that they smelled smoke and the vessel was warm but they couldn't locate the fire.

Coast Guard officials told the people on board - who were all wearing life jackets - to jump into the water, link arms and wait for rescue. As the Coast Guard dispatched a 45-foot rescue boat and a helicopter, it alerted other boats in the area that help was needed. Within five minutes another pleasure boat pulled up and rescued the five adults and three children, Gaines said.

The eight people were taken to Loch Lomond Marina in San Rafael. No injuries were reported. The Tiburon Fire Department extinguished the fire on the boat, Gaines said.

"The owner called the Coast Guard and was instructed to put life jackets on everyone, get into the water and wait for help. The owner also fired flares into the air, so other boaters would know they were in trouble."

"He shot two up in the air and didn't get anybody's attention. The third shot he fired across the bow of a boat he saw going by, that got that boats attention and they came over and plucked them out of the water," Capt. Sloan Valentino said.
