  • National Guard Working To Rescue 1 Year Old Off Yacht 900nm Off Mexico

The Hans 36' Rebel Heart Rebel Heart is 900 nm nautical miles off shore when 1 year old Lyra fell severly ill.

The NG dropped four medically trained parachuters and Zodiac inflatable boats out of a long-range Lockheed MC-130P aircraft into the ocean near the sailboat. The medics boarded the sailboat and provided immediate aid, and on today a helicopter will be sent out to the craft, refueling in midair along the way, to bring the girl to a medical facility on shore.

The Kaufmans have been cruising the western side of Mexico for the past year and were enroute to the South Pacific. The Rebel Heart has a very detailed blog of their adventures, which you can read HERE

Eric is a regular poster over at Cruisers Forum as Rebel Heart. Hopefully will get some detail from him when (if) he gets everything sorted out and the boat back to Mexico.

        From Cruisers Forum:

        FYI...latest update from Facebook:

Looks like they "got the boat running" and are heading to Cabo with all onboard.

"UPDATE! I just got off the phone with the Lt. Col in charge of this mission. Lyra is stable. They have go the boat running! They have have turned around and are heading to Cabo. There is a Navy ship heading to meet them. If anything changes with Lyra they will med vac her out. As of right now she is still on the boat. They should meet up with the Navy ship tomorrow night. Once they meet up they will transfer the family to the ship and sail them to Sad Diego."

According to this post from a few minutes ago on Cruiser's Forum, the boat has been scuttled:

Charlotte from Rebel Heart contacted her sister, Sariah and stated that RH was scuttled by the Navy due to a leak on the boat which made it a navigational hazard. Family are all fine including Lyra. Steaming toward San Diego.

That's has to be a very bittersweet moment, seeing all that time, money and effort as well as family plans being sunk.

But they still are together and it sound like a close knit family in San Diego, and Lyra seems to be responding well.

                  They will rebound, I suspect.

Rescuers help a sick baby stranded in a sailboat in the Pacific. (U.S. Navy)

A California couple who got stranded with a sick infant in the Pacific Ocean — and had to be rescued by a task force consisting of the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and California Air National Guard — is now stuck in the middle of a social media firestorm.

Why would anyone take a baby and a 3-year-old on a Magellan-like voyage around the world? That’s the question.

The answer: “This is how our family has lived for seven years.”

Charlotte and Eric Kaufman, along with their two daughters, Cora, 3, and Lyra, 1, set sail two weeks ago from Mexico, their blog states, on the latest leg of a trip around the world. But when Lyra broke out in a severe rash and got an infection that did not respond to medication, according to local media KPIX 5, they sent a distress ping to a satellite and called it quits.

They sure are getting beat up on the social media commentary side by the uneducated battery chuckers.

                        A Message From Rebel Heart

With our heroes from the 129th Rescue Wing, California Air National Guard

First, we would like to express our profound gratitude for the 129th Rescue
Wing of the California Air National Guard. These people are true heroes,
along with Commander Alva and the crew of the USS Vandegrift. We will
                        remember them forever.

We have been happy with the maritime life we have been able to share with
our daughters. Even as we write this, several other boats are crossing the
same stretch of water that Rebel Heart was on, with families who seek to
show their children the world. Children have been sailing on boats for a
long time, and the modern cruising family dates back several decades.

To our supporters and those who also seek an adventurous path with their
families, we thank you for your kind words and support. From professional
rescuers, professional sailors, and other families at sea we have been
buoyed by your warmth and kindness. For those who are more critical, we ask
that you kindly await all the details. There have been many inaccuracies
reported through various media related to our daughter's health, the
vessels' condition, and our overall maritime situation.

While we are thankful for the unsolicited generosity we have received and
been offered, we encourage you to consider donating to That Others May Live
( ), which provides relief to the families of
members of the United States Air Force Rescue community when tragedy

In case it wasn't covered here. Learned last night that CG coordinated (as thought) and the reason for calling in ANG was range of helo primarily. CG doesn't have inflight refueling- they "lily pad" from ship to ship. Beyond jurisdiction/International was part of it too and I suppose maybe medical capability. The practical issue was 900 mi range capability.
