  • Seattle Nood Part 1

    The just completed Seattle Nood attracted 231 contestants in 21 Classes to soak up the sun
    And enjoy the mild conditions on and off the water

    Classes of J-109, Beneteau 36.7, J-105, Performance 30, J-24, Thunderbird Deception Mini Made up group A.
    Melges 24, San Juan 21, San Juan 24, Santana 20, Sport Boat Ultimate 20 made up group B
    29er/Open Skiff, 505, Laser, A- Cat, Thistle, International Formula18 And Vanguard 15 round up Group C

    With primarily short windward leeward courses with start /finish in the center, the race management was able to bang off as many as 15 races , keeping the crews working hard in the moderate winds and modest current.

    A joint effort by Seattle Yacht Club and Corinthian Yacht club helped divide the work but unify the benifits

    First time sailing in Seattle. It was lovely. I'd like to compliment the race committee for getting off so many races in some challenging conditions and keeping boats of vastly different speeds separated enough on the same course as to not cause too many crossing problems. 14 races in 3 days for the big boats and 8 races in 2 days for the small boats. So nice to have short tight courses and stay out on the water to use the extended evening light.

      All 3 PRO's I think where disapointed in not getting 2-4 more races in on each course.

        As 10 boats sailed in the Gulf Coast Championship held at Corpus Christi in preparation for next year’s Melges 24 Worlds, the relatively unknown PNW Melges 24 fleet participated in the Seattle NOOD regatta. With close to 30 local boats in the PNW, it is one of the strongest Melges 24 fleets in the USA. The Seattle NOOD Regatta, sponsored in part by CYC of Seattle and Seattle Yacht Club, was a well attended event with 17 local boats registered.

        The weather forecast for the weekend was 5-15 knots and beautiful sunshine. Mother Nature can be rather fickle but she delivered as promised with steady breezes building to 20 knots at times. Charley Rathkopf, the PRO, started the fleet out on Friday with four races, leaving the fleet hungry for more. Junk Shot, driven by Matt MacGregor, took the lead early and won the day. Newcomer Jason Rhodes on Suspicious Behavior had an impressive hold on second while Michael Bond, owner of Recidivator, ended up third for the day.

          Saturday started out with blue skies and light breeze. Winds built steadily through the day topping out at about 15 knots. Junk Shot stayed atop the leader board but ended up second on the day after five races. pTeron, owned by Dan Kaseler, last year’s fleet and overall winner for the event, pushed hard on Saturday to capture first for the day. Suspicious Behavior stayed consistent to come in third on a tie-breaker.

          Sunday morning came quick for the fleet as they already had nine races in the bag and decent breeze in the forecast. By the end of the day, five more races were put on the board. Junk Shot was once again first on the day and took home first in the fleet. Recidivator found herself on the leader board again with a second for the day and third place for the weekend. Clumsy Ninja was anything but clumsy on Sunday, taking third for the day. pTeron found herself fourth for the day but worked hard and managed to hammer out a second overall.

          The fleet was represented by diverse skill levels and age ranges. On the water were two family boats with parents and children sailing together. There were also two women helming boats for the weekend, one of which also sported an all women crew. The NOOD regatta is a well managed event with Seattle being a fantastic venue. We look forward the next year.
