Heineken Claims another Bridge to Bridge Title

In a year that saw 30 knots of breeze on top of a 4.5 knot ebb. Just making it out to the starrt was a victory of sorts. ONly 2 of the 8 18's that were rigged and ready to go, braved the "sure to break shit, and no good can come of it" conditions...in the end, the foiling kites were the weapon of choice, and Johhny Heineken claims yet anothe B2B title...finishing in 15 minutes and 01 seconds, compared to last year flood conditions when the record of 11 minutes and change...more to follow!

All dressed up and no where to go..when the time to go or time to stay, prudence reigned over adventure
and 6 of the 8 18's opted to not go trash themselves and boats...

                              Moore 24 Nats

                              Meanwhile, down in Monterey...

MONTEREY >> Thirteen identical sailboats crafted in Santa Cruz skimmed across the Monterey Bay Sunday afternoon to compete in the last day of the three-day Moore 24 Nationals.

Mike Gross and Louis Algaze, two race officers whose responsibility was to regulate the sailboat race, navigated the gentle waters of Monterey Bay into the rough sea to set up the starting line for the race. In this case, the starting line was marked with a pair of orange inflatable buoys.

Once the buoys were set and floating perpendicular to the wind's direction, the 13 sailboats voyaged toward the starting line. A big challenge, Gross said, is to control the boat and read the wind to not cross the start line too soon — points are deducted otherwise.

The key in sailing is to make as little mistakes as possible, Algaze who has been sailing for more than 20 years said.

As the wind blew them closer into the starting line, a horn went off and the boats sailed on under a cloudless sky about 1 p.m. A 1.4 mile ocean stretch was circled twice by the sailboats and finished the race about an hour later. Sailboat No. 68 crossed the finish line first with its blue sail head on and it's crew named the Druntled crew won the overall six-race series with a total of 18 points.

The winning crew was made up by three men from Richmond, California and one man from Santa Cruz.

After the award ceremony, David Hodges, Simon Winer, Ron Tostenson and David Corvette all jumped from their boat into the ocean celebrating their victory.

Second place was grabbed by the Paramour crew on boat No. 75 with a total of 19 points and with a total of 23 points, the Moore Wave*Ohs crew placed third.

Kathryn Myers, a 43-year-old from Seattle, was one of the crew members of the winning crew Saturday afternoon. She says that sailing is more than a sport for her, it's a hobby.

Myers was introduced to sailing at the age of 2 and would often go sailing with her family on a lake in Wisconsin, where she used to live. Then, at the age of 7, she began taking lessons and hasn't stopped sailing since.

One of the characteristics of the Moore 24 Nationals or Dolphin Cup, is that every boat competing is identical, which is why it's referred to as a one-design race. With that there's equality in craftsmanship when competing and rules that require keeping a maximum crew weight of 825 pounds with no limit on the amount of people a crew can have.

The youngest participant was a 15-year-old sailor, who says she started sailing at the age of 12. The ages in this specific competition ranged between 15 and 46 years of age.

"The heavier the boat is the more advantage the crew will have," Gross said.

The sailboats are not too expensive compared to other types of boats, Gross said. The prices usually range between $12,000 and $15,000.

"But sometimes you can find a boat like this at about $2,000, but you'll need to fix them up quite significantly," he said.

The Moore 24 sailboat is described as a "classic" by its maker, Ron Moore. Based in Watsonville, Moore has been making sailboats for more than 40 years.

With the intention of bringing the sailing community together, the Monterey Yacht Club hosted the sailboat competition. Algaze said this is the second time the Yacht Club has hosted a competition in this category.

In addition to holding the eventual race, every Wednesday afternoon the Yacht Club welcomes the small sailing community in Monterey to take a boat out and sail with members of the club.

Every Wednesday about 20 boats voyage toward the sea and engage in friendly competitions, Algaze said.

"It's a nice way to hang out with the boys and enjoy the sea," he said.
