Looks like the St. Franny has lifted the "PHRF (-45) or lower" rating restriction for the multihulls, and are now allowing F-31's (PHRF +9) to enter.

3.4 Multihull Handicap yachts with valid BAMA certificate, rating of -45 or faster and minimum of 33’LOA, including pole.

91 boats... and does not "feel like" the small/mid-boat series that it has been in recent past (ok, there are 11 melges 24)

Looking forward to a fun start line (6 boats in ORR A [46,48.3,50,50,54,78 ft] + the two TP52s sharing the line), not the same management issue as 27 J/105s but the overall higher speeds, the differential in speed/sizes, and the overall lesser ability to slow down should make for some good times.

We know that the first race for the St. Francis Perpetual trophy occurred in September of 1964; or did it?

In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, we had the best active fleet of big racing sailboats in the country and perhaps in the world. Most every weekend during the season would find on the racecourse the 73ft yawl, Bolero, the 72ft yawl, Baruna, the 65ft yawl, Good News, the 63ft cutter, Orient and the 63ft yawl, Athene. In addition, there were several other very fine big yachts, which were just a little smaller, most notably, the 55ft yawls, Santana and Ocean Queen. Somewhat different from the way things are today, all of these yachts were privately owned and sailed by their owners. There was not a professional in sight.

In 1913, Sir Thomas Lipton of America’s Cup fame presented a very ornate trophy to the Pacific Inter Club Yacht Association to be raced for during the Worlds Fair held here in 1915. The Panama Pacific Exhibition was to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal. Yacht racing was to be a principal part of the Fair’s activity. Shortly thereafter, the trophy disappeared.

In 1959, in the trophy cabinets of the Olympic Club, our Staff Commodore Leonard Delmas discovered it! Through the efforts of Staff Commodore Dennis Jordan, owner of Bolero, and James Michael, owner of Baruna, a special series of four races for the trophy was to be conducted by our club in September of 1960. Both men were well known in the Southern California yachting world.

Around that time, our member W.L. Stewart sold the 67ft yawl, Chubasco, which had been successfully racing in the Los Angeles area. She had been up here once before for the start of the 1939 Honolulu race, and everyone remembered her as the first yacht to pass under the Golden Gate Bridge only an hour after the start of that race. Jordan and Michael contacted her new owner, Donald Haskell of the Newport Harbor Yacht Club, who accepted an invitation to bring Chubasco back to the bay for the series. Chubasco arrived a week before the series and was given a berth at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon right next to Baruna and Bolero. It was quite a sight to have three of the world’s most beautiful and famous racing yachts all together, along with their little sister, Santana.

The racing was to be conducted over the course of two weekends starting on Saturday, September 9, 1960. All starts and finishes were to be right in front of the St. Francis Yacht Club, and to be around the 14.6-mile channel course. The activity around the club was unbelievable. Don Selby, the Chronicle yachting writer, estimated that better than ten thousand people were in and around the club to see all four races.

Bolero won the series with Chubasco second and Baruna third. The visitor, Chubasco, came into her own during the fourth and final race, which she won quite handily, finishing first on corrected time. Captain Haskell had recruited local guru Myron Spaulding to provide local knowledge. In that final race on the downwind run, Spaulding took Chubasco south of Alcatraz while the rest of the fleet ran between Alcatraz and Angel Island. Commodore Jordan was quoted as saying, “Impossible”.

The series was very successful, and did much to cement relations between Southern California and Northern California yachtsmen.

In the Monday morning Chronicle, Don Selby signed off by calling the “BIG BOAT SERIES” a huge success, and certainly something to be repeated. It was to be repeated, but not until 1964. The grand fleet in the next few years moved on. Good News departed on a circumnavigation, and Athene went on to race to Tahiti and cruise the South Pacific. Bolero and Orient both sold into Southern California and Chubasco moved on to race in Florida.

It was over, but not forever.

The Readers Digest Short Attention Span Report: Day 1 2015 Rolex Big Boat Series...

As the early season low pressure system that brought Northern California an early and much desired
rain to help douse some very nasty fires began to exit stage right, contestants at the 2015 Rolex Big Boat Series
had to patiently wait for the normal high pressure system to rebuild off the coast.





It took a while and finally, closer to 1:00 PM vs the schedule 11:00 AM 1st gun, the stand in race guru's, The Reggios,
Peter and Anderson pulled the trigger and the 2015 BBS was under way in 10-12 knots and brilliant sunshine!





The breeze built throughout the day, and, the conditions had gotten so nice, 15 -20 in a building ebb, that the RC opted to run a 2nd race, despite the
afternoon running late. 16:00 starts in the BBS have not been seen since the late afternoon Wednesdays Businessmans afternoon classics, back in the 70's and
early 80's when the BBS used to run for an entire week. Coincidentally those day were the last in which we saw Kialoa III, fresh off her Sydney Hobart and Fastnet
victories...
