    Coastal Cup Race Description

The 24th running of the classic Coastal Cup Ocean Race will take the fleet from a start line off Monterey to a finish line off the beautiful Santa Barbara Yacht Club. The Santa Barbara Yacht Club is partnering with Encinal Yacht Club to host this exciting and challenging race. Why Monterey? Keep reading!

The race is open to both monohulls and multihulls. Several starts will be conducted off Monterey, CA starting on Monday, June 30th. It is recognized by the Race Committee that winds can become light overnight in the Santa Barbara Channel, hence the Race Committee intends to time fleet starts so that all boats arrive at the western end of the Santa Barbara Channel on Wednesday morning, thereby finishing Wednesday afternoon off the beautiful Santa Barbara Yacht Club race deck. The Santa Barbara Yacht Club holds weekly beercan races Wednesday evenings, so there will be festive events at the club that evening to greet racers and their families.

The Spinnaker Cup, Coastal Cup, and the SoCal 300 Ocean Race will, together, comprise the inaugural California Cup Regatta.

Trailerable boats outfitted for ocean racing are strongly encouraged to participate. Boats wishing to enter the first two legs can be hoisted out of the water in Santa Barbara and trailered home for Saturday's Delta Ditch Run, or they may continue to San Diego and be hoisted from the water there. In 2015, Moore 24 Mas! won the Coastal Cup, both in Elapsed Time as well as in Corrected Time, sailing the 280 mile course from San Francisco to Santa Barbara in under 44 hours. Moore 24 SNAFU finished an hour and a half later to take second place overall, then trailered their boat home to race in the Delta Ditch Run the next day. Well done guys!

The Coastal Cup Ocean Race will be scored using Time-on-Time handicapping based on Northern California downwind PHRF ratings. This race will use the US Sailing Safety Equipment Requirements (USSER) at the Coastal Level, with very few modifications as will be outlined in the Notice of Race. USSER includes a Safety at Sea requirement for this race, so participants should plan accordingly. Encinal Yacht Club will host a two-day Safety at Sea Seminar on May 14th and 15th, 2016.

    2016 California Offshore Race Week
    San Francisco to San Diego

New for 2016, Encinal Yacht Club, San Francisco Yacht Club, Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club, Santa Barbara Yacht Club, and San Diego Yacht Club are joining forces and races to provide you and your family with an exceptional offshore race week that will take ocean-rated boats from San Francisco to San Diego, with stops in Monterey and Santa Barbara. Races may be joined individually, or enter the entire series to be eligible for the overall series trophy, which will be presented on Sunday, June 5th, at the San Diego Yacht Club. US Sailing is pleased to endorse this series as a major West Coast Regatta.

    Spinnaker Cup Ocean Race

    May 27th through May 28th

The Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club and the San Francisco Yacht Club invite you to join their classic coastal race from San Francisco Bay to beautiful Monterey. Bring the family along and spend the weekend enjoying all that Monterey has to offer.

    Coastal Cup Ocean Race

    May 30th through June 1st

The ocean racing picks up again on Monday, when the Encinal Yacht Club and the Santa Barbara Yacht Club invite you to join the classic coastal race from Monterey Bay to the beautiful beach town of Santa Barbara. Move the family down the stunning Big Sur coast to spend a few days enjoying all that Santa Barbara has to offer.

    SoCal 300 Ocean Race

    June 3rd through June 5th

Ocean racing picks up again on Friday, when the Santa Barbara Yacht Club and the San Diego Yacht Club invite you to join the second running of the SoCal 300 Ocean Race. Move the family down the coast to spend the last few days of the week enjoying beautiful San Diego.

The 2015 SoCal 300 was scored using ORR ratings. At this point the Race Committees are working with US Sailing on an appropriate rating system for the oveall coastal series, that is perhaps more involved than standard PHRF ratings yet less involved than ORR ratings, and we hope to have an answer soon. Note that the Spinnaker Cup, Coastal Cup, and SoCal 300 will be scored as individual races, but all will be rescored for purposes of calculating a boat’s overall standing in the California Offshore Race Week.

Encinal Yacht Club, San Francisco Yacht Club, Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club, Santa Barbara Yacht Club, and the San Diego Yacht Club look forward to hosting these events. Please consider joining.

Seems like a good way to reinvent and reinvigorate, IMHO.

This has been in the work for a while and I'm glad they put it together. Glad they also kept the Spinnaker Cup on Friday.

Are you planning to do one or both coastal races?

We are already working up a plan to do both coastal races. Seems like a great way to get some ocean miles on our new boat (Spadefoot).

We are planning on all three. Still like the name "California Sprint Cup" over the name chosen - but if it gets owners back on the water, that is a good thing. The SoCal 300 is a fantastic course and alot of fun. My 11 year old daughter did the race with us and wants to go again. Her new top speed is 22+ knots.

We are going to try to get more juniors on the boat to participate in the different legs of the race.

              Cheers,

Is the Spinnaker Cup a well attended event? Not many signed up so far.

                Cheers,

I think the Spinnaker Cup averages 25-30 boats.

Incorporating into the offshore series should increase numbers.
