  • OYRA season starts with the Lightship Race on April 16th

The OYRA season starts a week from Saturday on April 16th. We will again have 9 races starting with a trip around the SF entrance buoy generally known as the Lightship.

We have 32 boats signed up so far.

SI's should be out this week without fleet splits and fleet splits will be done as late as possible to accommodate the procrastinators.

At the request of SSS we have a new single handed group which so far has 3 boats signed up. If they get a few more we will give them their own start.

Many of our regulars are back again this year and we have some new boats as well. Don't you want to be among them?

Sign ups are on Jibeset here: https://www.jibeset.net/YRA000.php?RG=T006148269

The gear list is posted on jibeset and is also here http://norcalorc.org/gear

Safety at Sea training is required for the skipper and 30% of the crew (count includes skipper) but you still have time because Coastal SAS is now available online here: http://www.ussailing.org/education/safety-at-sea/ For most of our boats it's really just skipper +1 but you do the math.

Feel free to PM, email, call or send a carrier pigeon with questions.

I look forward to seeing you at the start line!

    Andy

We're all signed up (missing day 1 of JFEST to do this, our first OYRA event). Prepped the boat, bought the gear, got trained (3 of us) so we're excited to be heading to the Lightship for the first time since the J105s stopped going (2008?). The only problem at this point - we have no idea what time the start is likely to be. I have some logistics to take care of in the morning - shuttling the boat over from Alameda, getting the OD sails to the St Francis for Sunday etc. I need to know what time to get up in the morning. Any ideas?

Welcome to the party! SI's should have gone up by now (less division splits), let me work on that...

The answer depending on where you are coming from is invariably EARLY.

Radio check in is required between 08:30 and 09:30 and is not accepted after 09:30 (hint- be close enough) and the first gun is at 09:40.

Sailing instructions are posted on Jibeset here sans division splits: https://www.jibeset.net/YRA000.php?RG=T006148269

Division splits will be up on Thursday. Hint: PHRO1 is too big and will likely be split, at least for the first few races before everybody bugs out for Hawaii.

Thanks Andy. Wow - autopilots OK for everyone! I didn't expect that until Drakes Bay, but I like it.
One little typo that you may want to fix when setting the PHRF breaks: In the description of YRA 7, you don't state the number of nautical miles from TI to the buoy, just "nm".

                  We're up to 60!

55 boats approved, 3 staying home, 1 we are still chasing for info, and 1 not responding to email/phone calls

Hopefully as the front passes the seas subside and the wind does not die altogether!

There is nothing in the NOR or SI's that changes RRS on postponements, and RRS 27.3 just says that a RC may postpone for any reason.

For all the radio bitching today I doubt not postponing would have changed much except maybe for the boats in the first start.

I think the idea of waiting a few minutes to see if things get better is a pretty standard thing to do.

were it an in the bay buoy race, I'd agree completely. An ocean race however? In the name of all that is holy, please...just get it started...we can figure it all out, in fact that's the way the game is played. The quest for "perfect" leads to decisions like ending an ocean race at a conveniently windy spot in the Santa Barbara Channel, so no one is inconvenienced by the need to switch gears and do some wind seeking and light air sailing. what if it had been blowing 25 at the start and 0 at the deepwater channel? we would have had to solve the problem...it absolutely is NOT the responsibility of the RC to solve it for us by waiting for "ideal" conditions across the course.
your fleet was sailing this morning at 0940, and they wanted to GO. just maybe the OYRA RC might want to listen to the vhf votes of their constituents. BTW, if you ask Charles, he'll tell you that this isn't the first time that I've tried to make this point.

Double Handed Farallones was postponed for two hours this year waiting for enough wind to start.

If the wind had come up during the postponement the RC would be geniuses but because it did not they are idiots?

I don't think the RC was waiting for "perfect" or "ideal" they were trying to wait for conditions that would prevent boats from having to start their motors and drop out to avoid obstructions like Anita Rock and the south tower.
