It was a very fun race down to HMB - beautiful weather and only one brief section of light air just off Point Bonita. The sea state was a bit sloppy, which made it hard to drive for the 30 mins or so we were in < 6kts of breeze. Based on the weather reports from the prior day and the forecast, we expected a very marked wind gradient between the ocean and land off Montara. Our strategy was to be "the boat in the most pressure" and so we resolved to be the most westerly boat on the course for the run South. We banged the corner and jibed back when G3 was at 90 degrees magnetic, which over-stood the layline for the 15kts we were seeing, but put some in the bank in case we needed to drive high in any light stuff close to shore. The move paid off and we managed to correct out ahead of the big Swan, which was a spec against the hills when we finally made our turn for G3. Considering that we overstood both the layline for the Lightship and for G3, the good showing was a bit of a surprise. I suspect that there really was more breeze outside for most of the trip, notwithstanding that there was plenty when we arrived in HMB. Also, the J105/Asym combo really likes to reach, so the fine AWA on the run South probably helped quite a bit too.

If you don't mind spilling some more trade secrets and if you remember, which kite were you using (A2/A3?) and what wind angles were you sailing with the kite?
For some reason the J105 VMG in waves seems to really favor boat speed over angle. We are consistently footing upwind and hot downwind on the ocean (compared to OD racing on the bay), but it seems to work out better that way.

That being said, the sail is quite flexible and we prefer it over the light air "reacher" that I had made a few years ago and never seemed to perform well in any weather. The wind speed started off about 9kts at the Lightship and built to 14 + further down the course. Our VMG wind angle in 10 kts is about 140 degrees and at 15kts its about 155 degrees. We stayed at the higher 140 degree angle as the wind built and traded depth for speed and positioning on the course. I saw 19kts briefly in a gust right after we jibed, and then it moderated somewhat as we got closer to shore.

While there are many differences between the 109 and 105 I would think there is also a lot of cross over, especially downwind with the A sails.
