  • YRA Second Half Opener

I know Andy posted NOR/Registration information earlier in the week, but like many things
it got washed when the interweb host techs attempted restores after PD overwhelmed the server...

However...we shall see you out there! If you don't have a ride get one! If you have room on your boat,
    let others know!

                2016 YRA 2nd Half Opener

The squeals and hoots coming from the boats were loud and clear. The participants in this years Bonita race were having a blast!

With solid pressure under overcast skies, 54 boats in 12 divisions embarked on the 22 nm race course from North of Treasure Island,
out the gate in a building ebb. a solid 12- 15 knots made short work run out to Bonita Rock just offshore of the Point Bonita Lighthouse.
The 1st boats round the buoy in just over an hour, and setting their kites for the blast back into the bay

The Bonita Race, part of the YRA's annual series has always had a great appeal, drawing over 300 boats back in the 70's'
"We had a lot of smaller boats back then and most would raft up overnight at the the Encinal YC" Patrick Broderick, former YRA
commodore recalls. "The raft up would fill the harbor and extend into the estuary, and the party would rage on, well into the late
                hours"

Times change, and with many high performance, low accommodation go fast machines combined with numerous larger boats now participating,
the numbers of overnighters has dropped. But the appeal of the Bonita Race has remained.

"It's always been a great offshore intro for many boats and newby crews, to poke their noses outside the Gate and get a taste of offshore racing
without too big of a commitment" Pat indicates " For some, it may be the only offshore experience the boat or crew will get all year, yet it opens up
eyes and ears to the possibilities"

For some, like the guest driver in Daniel Theilman's Melges 32', Kuai, the chance to drive can prove exhilarating for driver and crew

With 3 C&C 30's in the mix, the Bonita Race attracts the grand prix crowd as well. Frank Slootman's fresh out of the box Invisible Hand's
used the Bonita race as their 1st of what is looking like a rush to the new one design. " Its a great boat" Frank exclaims "Just like the larger grand prix boats,
but in a compact package. The one design racing is much better and the results tell the tale. If you win, you win. If you lose you lose!"

With Julian Mann's C&C 30 Don't Panic in the mix and racing Saturday, SF Bay now has 3 boats and is expecting 8-10 on the line for the Big Boat Series

Mark Kennedy's Flying Tiger 10 Cento Miglia sports her new Quantum kite with the cool graphics enroute to Sport Boat honors

Th Bonita race is a 5 part ordeal, with the beat to Bonita, the run back to The Gate, The Gate to Bay Bridge, The Bay Bridge to the Estuary and the Estuary itself.
All stretches with different complexions and different challenges. You need to complete all legs in reasonable fashion to take your division!

We tried, but couldn't touch it.... Mary McGrath and Rich Pipkin's new to them J-125, formerly Double Trouble now Can't Touch This means no more double handing
offshore, but working with a full crew. "This was the only boat we were willing to give up the J 105 for" Mary and Rich agree "It handles the breeze so well and is so well balanced, even in the big stuff, its a dream to sail" The two veterans of years of offshore sailing have solid plans for the boat and yes, The Pacific Cup in 2018 is in the crosshairs!

Bob Walden's Cal 39' Sea Star bring the party to the party!
