Also, it's not clear from the way this post was pasted together - who issued this protocol, the San Francisco HSC or USCG Sector San Francisco? Also, who wrote the intertwined text?

"On (sic) area of large contention is the Ferry Terminal and the area and immediate surrounding water. In recent 3BF's some boats have dropped anchor in the stay clear zone and that has cause much consternation with the Ferry Boat captains who are dealing with tight conditions and big currents already."

The "Stay Clear Area" depicted around the Ferry Building is well away from the route sailed by 3BF racers. The problem has been the entrance to Pier 39. Please don't anchor there folks.

So anchoring at the ferry terminal is okay then?

For those who can't spell scissors, sure. Knock yourself out.

(See my post #15: "Agreed on not anchoring near the ferry terminals or entrance to Pier 39.")

[QUOTE=BobJ;45666]YRA and SSS have long restricted the Pinole Shoal Channel, forcing the fleets to the south side where the ferries want to go (I assume to shorten their routes). Why can't the ferries use the Pinole Shoal channel since it is already reserved for commercial traffic?

Similarly, SSS and now YRA have restricted a large area off the Richmond Long Wharf, forcing the fleets into the narrow band left between the North Channel and Southampton Shoal channels depicted on the chart. Again, the ferries could use the deep water channel, skirting the edge if a ship is in it.

The Pinole Shoal Channelis a Regulated Navigtion Area. "Vessels - vessels weighing less than 1600 gross tons or tugs with tows weighing less than 1600 tons are not permitted to enter or cross over Pinole Shoal Channel." This would include the Vallejo ferries - and of course any J-boats. Check the National Registry 165.1811

The Vallejo Ferry routes are shown on up-to-date charts. They are South of the Pinole Shoal Channel. The San Francisco Marine Exchange established these <sfmx.org>. It's the organization that created the charts and verbage. YRA was invited to the meetings where the ferry routes were established and voiced concerns since most race courses cross the ferry routes, sometimes multiple times. While small craft (private boats) are not restricted from the ferry routes, the ferries are expected to stay on them. The Sausalito Ferry, for instance, used to pass either on the West or East side of Alcatraz depending on current, but now must pass East to the separation zone near YRA 21. Separation and narrow channels are cautionary for small craft, except for the Ferry Building (which is really not a concern for racer).

And let's not even get close to the "T" pier at the Carquinez Strait entrance, which has exactly the same "Security Zone" requirements as the Richmond Long Wharf. Let sleeping dogs lie.

I'm happy to let sleeping dogs lie but we got this just before the 3BF, so someone isn't wanting to do that...

Lots today. Hopefully it will be cleared out over the next few weeks.

A lot of it yesterday. Some large logs, boards with nails, pilings with rusty hardware and a lot of floating mats of some kind of water hyacinth looking thing. Alameda Estuary and close by behind TI is a problem. Berkeley Circle was OK.

Scary when you drop anchor to avoid being swept out by a 6 knot ebb and nasty pilings and tree trunks are working their way directly towards you!
