The Moore 24 /RYC Fleet Check In
A short report from Simon Winer on the 3BF
Counterclockwise never works ... well except for this time! Perhaps 20 boats headed off in the "wrong" direction and slipped past Treasure Island in dying zephyrs then they turned north and ran into the big hole and waited in the Circle before the lead "right" way boats (Legs Moore 24 #29 with Lester and Mary Robertson (AKA the Trophy Case) and a J22) who brought the north easterly with them. A few whoop whoops were exchanged between friendly boats, the southbounders knew nothing of their fate.
A giant hole with adverse current would hold the entire fleet in her clutches for at least a few hours, some elaboraters called it four! It was a great sight, just ask the US Coast Guard!
The "wrong" boats continued north and rounded red rock and headed for the city in big ebb. The Melges of Rufus (new RYC member) and Dylan Benjamin got a 1/2 mile jump on things after passing the first five Moores, some of whom got tangled with the very well guarded outbound ship that was probably just done with their business at the Concord Naval Weapons Station. "Stop your boat" was the order Gruntled got, it seemed sincere once the 50 cal gun was rotated about a bit.
The ebb was terrific and Bart and Simon reported seeing 9.7 knots on the GPS with just a lazy kite pulling them along. Will Baylis (on Billy's old #85 Eclipse) was duking it out with Caleb Everett's (Tortuga #154 from Newport Beach) ten year-old son who was doing driving duty!! But these boats didn't stay to the north enough in the strong ebb so at Blackaller, there were 5 Moore's practically overlapped (and there was a the blue Cal 40 Azure in the hunt too). The Melges got a super well-deserved gun (YAY RYC) then Caleb's kid overlapped with Will then the Cal 40 - except they ran onto the beach 20 ft short of the finish, I kid you not. Next was Simon and Bart on their Gruntled #68 then Kathryn Meyer from Seattle (Moore Cowbell #124) then our own Kurt Lahr with crew Alex Simanis from Ballard Sails in Seattle (Moore wave*ohs #34). Ron and Merrick also went the "wrong" way and were first Wabbit to finish (Keala).
A healthy dose of reverse and a big swell got the Cal 40 off terra firma unscathed and unfinished. A wabbit was rescued and towed home by RYC friendlies at 9PM after bobbing close to the Bay Bridge for many hours and a borrowed Moore snuck out into the vast Pacific for a late night drift fest before being rescued by RYC friendlies too.
Results:
1/ Rufus and Dylan Melges 24
2/ Tortuga Moore #154 Caleb's son driving (all 100 lbs)
3/ Eclipse Moore #85 Will Baylis and Crew
4/ Gruntled Moore #68 Bart and Simon
5/ Moore Cow Bell #124 Kathryn Meyer and Crew
6/ Moore Wave*ohs #34 Kurt Lahr and Alex Simanis

Cool story bro. Hoping some of this guys will show for the awards and divulge their decisioning process to take that route--seemed so contrary to all the info we were getting. I wanna know their pre-race weather data sources! Waaah!
kudos, 'specially to the Cal 40--sad to lose like that after an epic race. A Cal 40 up there overlapped with the first moores! Amazing!

Penalties will shuffle that a bit. Some boats crossed the starting line multiple times before their starting time. The starting line was restricted, there's the automatic 20-minute penalty, etc.
R/C is working as fast as possible so hang on...

Just received via Jibeset:
"To: All 3BF Racers
"The USCG has contacted the SSS regarding vessels transiting too close (well within the 100 yd restricted zone) to the Yerba Buena Island Coast Guard dock, and in multiple instances contacting the moored buoy tender ASPEN.
"We are committed to investigating the facts of these incidents, and we need the help of ALL racers. Our report to the USCG is due Thursday, and the thoroughness of our response may impact future event permits.
"Please give this matter your prompt attention.
"Anyone who came in contact with the ASPEN, or has any information about incidents involving the area surrounding the ASPEN, including photos, please contact the Race Committee at the following emails ASAP: commodore@sfbaysss.org, racechair@sfbaysss.org, raceinfo@sfbaysss.org
"Thank you again for your participation and prompt responses.
Best Regards,

This is your chance to do the right thing and withdraw if you violated the Coast Guard's restricted area, either because you failed to carry the required "alternative means of propulsion" or you chose not to use it. It would send the right message to the Coast Guard that the fleet will police itself. Let the SSS know that's why you are withdrawing.
I'm sure all of you were carrying item vi. above (right?) so you know the CG Depot at YBI is a charted restricted area. It's a restricted area for all boaters (like the bridge piers, etc.), not under the SI's, so the issue is between you and the USCG. Nonetheless, a lack of tangible response will jeopardize this fun race for everyone. So do the right thing and come forward.
I love this race and hope to keep doing it. I've also been its PRO so I know what David, Rick, et al are facing. Let's help them out with a solid response to the USCG.

To Bob J's point...the area in the dashed box below is the restricted area. I believe the RRS require us to follow all local laws and regs, and that includes avoiding restricted areas, even if they are not specifically called out in the SI's.

It's north end was also in the attachment to the SI's showing the bridge restrictions:
