  • The SSSS South Sound Series Starts With Solid Conditions

The South Sound Sailing Society's annual 4 race winter long distance series got off to a solid start on Saturday with
the 30.7 nm Vashon Island Race. The 1st of 4 events which includes the 30.8 nm Duwamish Head race, the 38.4 nm Toliva Shoal Race
and the 29.5 nm Islands race, boasts the most miles per series in the scenic Puget Sound in its more protected waters, ideal for winter sailing.

69 boats in 9 divisions made the most of the generous wind supplied in this years clockwise island circumnavigation that took the fleet northward up Colvos Passage,
over Pt Yashon and the back south down the East Passage before finishing back at the Tacoma Yacht Club. South Southwest breeze in the solid mid 20's and gusts to 30 pushed
the fleet quickly up the course, with multiple broaches, exploding kites and full pucker moments during the downhill sleigh ride.

A tight reach in lighter winds, in the sub 20 range, provided the fleet with a rather quick beat back south until reaching the eastern most point of Vashon Island, that being
Point Robinson, where the boats once again were in the unprotected waters off Maury Island, facing the southern winds on the nose for the final beat back to the Tacoma Yacht Club and the finish! Paul LaMarche's Santa Cruz 70 Neptune's Car completed the course in 3 hours: 30 Minutes and 15 seconds to correct out 04:10:15. The overall winner was Mark Harang's Evelyn 26'Nimbus which corrected out to miniscule 3:31:05. Read All About It HERE

All in all, a quick, thrilling ride all the competitors, the majority of which completed the course in ample daylight and were home in time for a warm dinner by the fire...
