BAY RESCUE: An Alcatraz ferry came to the aid of a sinking boat in the bay last night. All 10 people were rescued to the applause of passengers on the ferry. The small boat sank in 100 feet of water just minutes after the rescue. Great work Captain and crew of the "Alcatraz Flipper."
The U.S. Coast Guard received a distress call at 8:45 p.m. on Thursday that a pleasure boat hit some rocks on the north end of Alcatraz.
The "Lunna" was taking on water and had 10 passengers on board.
The Coast Guard issued an urgent marine broadcast to all other boats in the area, according to Petty Officer 2nd Class Nicole Emmons.
The "Alcatraz Flipper" heard the call and diverted to the sinking boat. ( Editor's note, we assume they meant Alcatraz Clipper"
All 10 passengers were safely rescued and taken to Pier 33 in good condition.
Emmons said "Lunna" sank in about 100 feet of water five minutes after the rescue.
Simon Houde, a tourist from Montreal, was on board the ferry during the rescue and shared video with KTVU.
