I'm told one of the boats is a new owner and not completely familiar with the nuances, and was training for Pac Cup.

Somewhat unrelated but I'm reminded of a discussion I had with one of the guys on my crew this weekend regarding owning a boat. Somewhere around 28-30 knots of wind is when you can tell who on the crew owns their own boat and who doesn't.
Boat owners: "We need to get this kite down"
Non boat owners: "Why are we taking the kite down? It's finally getting good!"

It's easier to make those decisions when you don't have to pay for the consequences of the bad ones.

Guess I'm confused but how would a PRO be held responsible for a boat not registered and who didn't even start their race?

Does a cruiser who happens to sail by the buoys in front of St FYC need to let the PRO know whats up?

Totally different story for boats registered in the race who sail on the course but don't officially retire. I believe there have been US Sailing(or whatever they call themselves these days) suspensions on this issue. Pretty simple, call in and retire once you miss the start by 5 mins...

FTR, the boat mentioned earlier was registered, but did not check in, from what I gather.

I suppose the PRO should have taken matter up directly with them, but a good rant is always fun!

Did the witch test prove positive?

                    +1 on jeff z’s post.

On a different subject: what was the deal with the sunfast? Just after rounding dux, we saw them going in circles, and looked like they had a boathook out. Did not look like an MOB, we were close enough we would have seen a person. We tried hailing on 16 and the race channel but nada. Then they started sailing the course again.

Another +1 for Jeff Zarwell's post. We said Jeff.

BTW, it's my understanding that both boats checked in with the RC.

There is a really simple activity that could have prevented this issue entirely.

                        READ THE SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

The OYRA SI's are very clear that you must check in and you must check out. Once you check in and are in the starting area you are racing, I don't think it actually matters if you cross the start line. This is the difference between DNC (did not compete) and DNS (did not start). You can have right of way as a boat that is "racing" before you cross the start line, right? Then you are racing... If you want to sail as an independent mariner, great. Don't sign up, check in, or sail by the start line.

The OYRA SI's also clear about the fact that you need to monitor the VHF. It does not say it has to be "on" (down below where you can't hear it) it says "monitor". That means that someone on board can hear it and react to it. We even quote the federal regulation that requires this.

We work hard to put out SI's that are as clear as possible. Please meet us half way and actually read them. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Oh yeah, the SI's also say you have to actually wear your offshore PFD including crotch/leg straps. That was drama from the Lightship race that could have been prevented by reading the SI's.

In case you got distracted by all the words in this post, let me be clear...

                        Read the sailing instructions!

The PRO and YRA people have had a chat with the skippers involved. I don't believe the PRO started this thread, nor did YRA.

So now we have to monitor channel 16 AND read the instructions?

Ok, I actually did 'LOL' after reading that comment. Before you know it they're gonna have a long list of required safety equipment and each boat needs to have too! What do they think they're doing? Running a race or something?
