  • Island Yacht Club's DHLS Opens The Offshore Season

    2023 Doublehanded Lightship

A feisty jaunt to open offshore season

Round Midnight, Rick Waltonsmith's Explorer 44' was 1st to finish with and elapsed time of 04:06:50

The unofficial Nor Cal Offshore season began on Saturday April 15th with a modest fleet of double handed boats taking part in the Island Yacht Club's Double Handed Lightship Race

25 boats in 4 divisions worked their way out the Gate with a marginal flood contesting their exit and brisk, westerly winds filling the Golden Gate Strait and spilling into SF Bay Proper.

It's worth mentioning that the abundance of precipitation that the NorCal area was given this past winter and spring has been delivering heaps of water down through the rivers and delta for a few months now, and with snowmelt now beginning in earnest, expect more of the same for the immediate future. And the colder fresh water which is less dense that the salty stuff, floats on top, creating an additional ebb effect, so floaty things, like boats may not feel much flood, even though the water levels are indeed rising... Plus wind on the cold snow melt will also feel colder... All should be back to normal by, perhaps August?

Anyways, back to the offshore opener stuff:

Mile Rocks as seen with Natali Criou's Beneteau Figaro Envolee in the distance splitting the uprights

Outsider, Greg Nelson's Azzura 310 with Wardog performing some sort of "F%#@ery" was 1st in division 2 to finish with a elapsed time of 04:26:40

Vitesse Too, Grant Hayes Hobie 33 took the northern route then picked a tasty windy line

Looking Good, Rafi Yahalom's F28 was the 2nd monohull to finish but 1st taking the northern route!

Snafu, Karl Robrock's tidy Moore 24 with Steve Bourdow not only won the Moore Class but corrected out to 04:07:25 for overall victory AND edged out Outsider by 13 seconds to win elapsed mono overall

Safety 3rd: An impressive offshore debut for Kurt Lahr and Alex Simanis new campaign partnership, 2nd in division and 2nd overall corrected!

Mooretician, always in the hunt, Peter Schoen and Roe Patterson were just off the pace but always in the podium conversation

Santa Cruz 33' Siren had some entertaining moments in the race, yet hung on for 1st elapsed and corrected in division 3

John Seigel's Moorigami, with Mike Holt were no doubt stratergizing on some interesting offshore courses for the 5o5 Worlds in September!
