The F18s will be there in force this year. Several teams will be coming up from So Cal...and hopefully staying out of the exclusion zone. We'll save some rum for you lead draggers

So it Begins....Stories from the Ditch, years past...

Caca Cabaza lends us this, Starting with the genisis of the Delta Ditch, which was 1st designed as a feeder for the South Tower Race, a brutal up uphill but down river trip from Stockton YC to the South Tower of the Golden Gate then BACK to Stockton....

This will probably come in a series of emails as the de-marinate from my skull. The very first STR was won by a Cal 2-30 with an elapsed time of just under 24 hours. That record stood for something like 15 years or so. Some memorable moments, early on you actually went around the South Tower and more than a few boats got pushed up on it in barnacle removal detail.

Buffoonery… Hmmm. The foredeck guy who went to gybe in real light air and fell through the foredeck hatch. The time we blew out our main on a C&C 38 about 3 hours into the race. It was blowing about 30 knots and the boatspeed actually increased. We took first around the weather mark and almost were first to finish until the boats with two sails finally caught us. Or the time we were driving home east of the Antioch Bridge in about 25 knots on too close a reach for the kite. Just as we decided that we had the stones to try it, we hoisted and as soon as the ‘two block” call was made, we hit a lump of 4 foot deep river in a 7.5 foot draft boat. The kite filled and pulled us up even higher.

The beehive. Yes. The beehive. It was a 5 liter bottle of tequila ($8.00US) with “Dixie riddle cups” taped to the side. At every gybe you had to take a shot. It wasn’t so much for the performance, you see, but we did sail to the polars downwind. Had to keep the angles correct for optimum performance.

            There will be more.

            Shep, get my memory started…

By the way. Ask War Dog how he got the nickname BBQ…
We'll get to the the 2008 Team Peckerhead Voyage d' E-Scow soon!
