Saturday Night: SSE wind 11 to 18 kt. Periods of rain, mainly after 11pm.

Sunday: S wind 18 to 24 kt becoming NNE in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 34 kt. Periods of rain.

Team Trunk Monkey Reports

This weekend was the annual Fall Dinghy regatta at the StFYC. Jody and I have sailed it the last 3 years in our 49er. We have a great time out there and it was great to sail against the top 49er teams from the US and Bermuda.

The 49er fleet only sailed on Saturday. On Sunday we were in complete agreement that the 30-35kt helicopter puffs that dropped off of the city were not going to make for a fun day. In fact, it was going to be a serious boat breaking day. After this, most of the fleet is headed back down to Miami for the annual Olympic Classes training in Key Biscayne Bay. Everyone figured it was probably best to keep the boats in top shape for the upcoming training instead of ragging ourselves to death on a cold, miserable day. At least it was a good excuse!

On Saturday we had three races in varying conditions. The breeze started from the SE in the first race and slowly shifted over to the SW by the last race. The first race had a massive flood, while the last race had massive ebb. The wind velocity was oscillating between 4 and 20 kts.

Over the day several small fronts would come through and shift the wind right with big puffs bouncing down the water as the wind came down the hills of San Francisco and took a few hundred yards to re attach to the water. We saw a couple of boats go over to weather, a sure sign of the huge velocity changes.

For Jody and I, it was perfect training weather (albeit cold!). We are working on our boat handling together, trying to get the transitions down between single stringing and double stringing. The sheet hand (Jody) literally drives the boat with the leech tension while the skipper just puts the bow in the right place to keep the boat from stalling. If the sheet is tight, the boat is in height mode. Conversely, if the sheet is eased, the bow is down and the boat is in rumble mode.

The goal is to transition smoothly between height and speed gears depending upon the conditions. In a skiff, it is NEVER “set it and forget it”. The boat and gears are always changing.

There is constant communication between the crew and skipper. The skipper is telling the crew how the helm feels and the crew is trimming for heel and direction. The crew is also downloading wind and water information while the skipper focuses on keeping the boat flat under the trim.

Watching all of the boats out there this weekend was awesome. We have some of the best 49er sailors in the country out of this area and we got a chance to race with them this weekend.

Jonny Goldsberry was sailing with Charlie Smythe. Jonny grew up sailing at the San Francisco Yacht Club and the two of them have been sailing together for about 3 years now. Their consistency shows in their starts, boat handling and boat speed.

Joey Pasquali and JV Gilmore grew up in the Bay Area as well. Joey has traditionally sailed with Rory Giffen, but while Rory is off working on Speedboat, JV stepped in and did a great job crewing for Joey. JV has been sailing 49ers and his red 18 consistently over the last few years. Both are phenomenal skiff sailors and it showed this weekend.

I didn’t get a chance to get to know the team from Bermuda, but they were sailing fast and had a half leg lead in the last race to take a well deserved bullet.

Alex Bishop and Val Smith were out from the East Coast (along with the Bermuda team) to do a couple of training weekends down in Santa Cruz. Their crew work was impressive to watch. We saw them practice a couple of quick wire to wire tacks before the start during which they had the boat up to pace immediately. It takes a lot of time in the boat to be that smooth and it looks like they are a program to keep an eye on.

Max Fraser and Dan Morris were out, and are ramping up a program sailing together. They had a bit of trouble the first race, but they just got better and better throughout the day.

Cooper, the Nilsen’s and ourselves rounded out the fleet with the old style rigs.

The next 5 weekends for us are going to be focused on the Aussie 18. Jody and I will be traveling down south with our third, Dan Morris, over the Thanksgiving holiday to sail against Howie, Mike, Andy, Matt and the rest of the SoCal crew. We are keeping our fingers crossed that Chad will make the trip south again with the Harken boat, too.

Monday morning procrastination has lasted long enough, it’s time to get some work done!
